MAS Bills

MAS Bills

MAS announced on 29 July 2010 that short term MAS bills would be issued as part of money market operations, serving as a complement to three other instruments – FX swaps, clean lending and borrowing, and SGS repos – which are used to inject or withdraw liquidity from the financial system.

The implementation of the MAS bills programme began in April 2011, with the issuance of 4-week MAS Bills, followed in August 2011 with the issuance of 8-week MAS bills. In July 2012, MAS plans to extend the tenor of its bills by issuing 12-week MAS bills.

By the end of FY11, about S$18 billion in outstanding MAS Bills were available for financial institutions. These help to broaden the availability and diversity of high-quality assets available in the market, to allow financial institutions to better manage their liquidity.

US breaks US$1b for first time in online Black Friday shopping

US breaks US$1b for first time in online Black Friday shopping
Posted: 26 November 2012 1034 hrs

NEW YORK: US shoppers spent heavily online on the crucial Black Friday shopping day, for the first time topping a billion dollars in online sales in a single day, analysts and retailers said.

The four-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend is the kickoff to the US holiday shopping season, and Black Friday has long been considered the critical day that turns retailers' books from red to black.

Consumer spending makes up more than two thirds of US economic activity. So the short but busiest consumer sales season has a huge importance to the US economy for the whole year.

This year, online shoppers spent a grand total of US$1.042 billion on Friday, surpassing last year's Black Friday haul by 26 per cent, according to the consulting firm Comscore.

Another study by IBM Benchmark Digital Analytics saw an increase of 21 per cent in Internet sales, with a surge in orders of mobile devices and tablet computers, in particular.

But the new record might be short-lived.

Coming next is "CyberMonday," the day Americans go back to work and online retailers launch heavy promotions to reel in more shoppers.

"According to norms we've observed over the past three years," retail analyst ShopperTrak said, the Monday after Thanksgiving "should be the heaviest online shopping day of the season with sales approaching US$1.5 billion or even higher."

Across the four-day weekend, US shoppers spent US$59.1 billion, a jump of 13 per cent over the previous year, the National Retail Federation announced.

"It's phenomenal," NRF director Mathew Shay told reporters at a press conference, saying the numbers bode well for the holiday season despite the still-struggling economy.

American consumers spent an average of US$423 this weekend, compared to US$398 last year, the group reported.

However, the NRF did not revise its prediction for the US holiday shopping season as a whole, keeping it at a 4.1 per cent increase year on year, arguing that consumers remain cautious about the economy.

The looming threat of the "fiscal cliff," which could send taxes soaring if Republicans and Democrats do not reach a compromise on reducing the deficit before the end of the year, also had the retailers worried.

And despite the good numbers overall, sales at brick-and-mortar locations were sluggish on "Black Friday:" in-store traffic increased by 3.5 per cent on Friday with more than 307 million visitors, but total sales actually went down compared to the previous year by 1.8 per cent, according to ShopperTrak.

Some of the biggest numbers went to the stores that opened early on the Thanksgiving holiday itself -- a growing trend, especially among large chain stores, that is turning the traditionally family-based holiday into a commercial event.

"Opening on Thanksgiving was a big win," the NRF's Shay said, noting that 35 million people went shopping, a 40 per cent surge over the previous year.

Comscore also noted a jump in online Thanksgiving day sales, up 32 per cent over 2011, with US$633 million in sales, though the IMB Benchmark Digital Analytics survey saw a more modest gain of 17.4 per cent.

But ShopperTrak noted that the Thanksgiving day shopping may have undercut spending usually meant for Friday, without increasing the overall numbers.

Apple most popular employer among fresh grads

Apple most popular employer among fresh grads
Posted: 11 August 2011 1257 hrs

SINGAPORE: Apple, the maker of the iPhone and iPad, is the most popular employer among entry-level jobseekers in Singapore.

This is the second consecutive year that the technology giant clinched the top spot in the annual survey by JobsCentral.

Close to 40 per cent of the more than 3,200 local university students and graduates surveyed chose it as the company they would like to work for.

CEO of JobsCentral, Lim Der Shing, said Apple's cool factor doesn't just affect the sales of its products, but has clearly spilt over to have a positive influence on its image as an employer.

But Mr Lim added, "Just like the popular gadgets that Apple produces, it's yet to be seen whether it's a passing fad or a trend that's here to stay."

While Apple is the employer of choice overall, Google appears to appeal most to the crème de la crème among the respondents.

Among those who received or expect to graduate with a First Class Honours or Summa Cum Laude, the majority expressed that they would like to work for Google.

Last year, Google came in second in the rankings among these top students, trailing behind Apple.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) displaced Singapore Tourism Board (STB) as the top government employer.

STB has been the most popular employer in the public sector, according to the survey, for the past three years.

The survey also looked into the salary expectations of fresh graduates.

Similar to last year, most respondents picked a range between S$2,500 and S$2,999 as their expected monthly salary for their first job.

However, a greater percentage of respondents this year (33 per cent) selected the S$3,000-S$3,499 range compared to last year (27.8 per cent).

While only 15.8 per cent of the respondents expected more than S$3,500 for their first job last year, 21.9 per cent of this year's respondents expect at least S$3,500 for their first job.

BroadcastAsia 2011 to see more overseas exhibitors

BroadcastAsia 2011 to see more overseas exhibitors
By Sara Grosse | Posted: 14 June 2011 1629 hrs

SINGAPORE: 86 per cent of exhibitors at BroadcastAsia 2011 are from outside Singapore, with a strong presence from Europe. The event that showcases technology and products will see group pavilions from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

It will feature over 650 exhibitors and cover 13,200 square metres of exhibition space, showing products that range from 3D and Hybrid TV to Digital Signage and Professional Audio Technology.

BroadcastAsia organisers said the exhibition boasts a growth of seven per cent this year compared to 2010.

There will be exhibitors from 43 countries and representatives from 12 group pavilions.

Highlights at the show include a Cinematography/Film/Production zone. where production companies will demonstrate the latest innovations.

BroadcastAsia's Senior Project Manager, Calvin Koh, said: "I think with Asian films evolving and moving at a very astounding speed and also most of the films right now in Asia, you can see they are highly recognised, more viewership.

"So we felt there is a need for us to continue to put equal or important emphasis on cinematography, film and production"

Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV), a combination of broadcast technology with the Internet and originally from Europe, will also be showcased for the first time at BroadcastAsia.

Sony will also unveil a few new products at the event. These include the new BVM series OLED monitors, as well as the first fully integrated 3D compact camcorder HXR-NX3D1P.

Chris Grey, Head of Content Creation Solutions at Sony Electronics Asia Pacific, said: "I think 3D is still on a wave and will continue. In fact, we got two new cameras at BroadcastAsia - one is compact size, another is a shoulder camcorder for 3D use. So yeah, we see demand and sales growing in that area."

A five to seven per cent growth in visitorship is expected this year, compared to last year. This thanks to an upbeat Asian economy, said organisers.

And when combined with CommunicAsia, BroadcastAsia's total sourcing budget shared by registered visitors is more than US$3.9 billion. That is a 12 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

BroadcastAsia 2011 will take place from June 21-24 at Suntec Singapore.

CommunicAsia set to be bigger

CommunicAsia set to be bigger
By Dylan Loh | Posted: 06 June 2011 1152 hrs

SINGAPORE: The CommunicAsia 2011 event -- Asia's largest knowledge-based information and communications technology platform -- will see a seven per cent increase in the number of exhibitors this year.

The exhibition and conference, which is into its 22nd year, will feature more than 1,400 exhibitors this June as compared to 1,300 last year.

About 80 per cent of them at the conference for industry players are from outside of Singapore.

More than 20 countries will be taking part in the conference which will be held at the Marina Bay Sands from June 21 to 24.

Singapore Exhibition Services communications events project director Victor Wong said: "This year, we added more relevance in terms of creating more tech zones and hospitality suites.

"I think we have grown to even more important than before, and many of the industry attendees have made it a point to attend".

The event is also seen as a chance for firms to boost their profiles.

Nokia Siemens Networks marketing & corporate affairs head Harith Menon said: "We see that if we are present in CommunicAsia, it gives us an opportunity to address all of the customers in one place".

A variety of ICT will feature in the event, including demonstrations of cloud computing services, mobile applications, wireless systems and the next generation 4G network.

The event last year drew more than 55,000 participants.

44% of employers struggle to fill vacancies

44% of employers struggle to fill vacancies

ALMOST half of employers in Singapore have problems filling vacancies in their companies, according to a survey conducted by a human resource firm.

Up to 44 per cent of employers have found it difficult to fill critical positions, said ManpowerGroup in a press release on Friday.

Sales representatives and engineering talents were the hardest to recruit, and have topped the list for at least five years. They are followed by technicians and drivers.

Out of all employers interviewed, one-third felt that applicants tend to lack the skills and experience necessary for the job.

This signals an imbalance between the number of available workers in the workforce and the number of qualified workers.

When asked what strategies employers were pursuing to overcome their difficulties filling positions, the most common responses in Singapore were to enhance benefits packages, focusing more on staff retention and broadening recruitment outside of Singapore .

Close to 40,000 employers across 39 countries and territories were questioned in the survey.

Light load for May's Patch Tuesday

Light load for May's Patch Tuesday

Just two bulletins are being issued for Patch Tuesday this month, one each for Windows and Office, addressing one vulnerability in the operating system and two in the productivity suite. The Windows bulletin has a critical security rating; the Office bulletin has only an important rating. Both patches solve remote code execution flaws in the affected software.

Many people will be able to get away without patching at all. The Windows patch only applies to server operating systems, leaving Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 untouched, and the Office patch doesn't apply to the latest Office 2010 and Office 2011 for Mac versions. Systems which do need the bulletins may need rebooting.

# Rating Impact Affected software
1 Critical Remote Code Execution Windows Server 2003/Server 2008/Server 2008 R2
2 Important Remote Code Execution PowerPoint 2002 (Office XP)/PowerPoint 2003/PowerPoint 2007/Office 2004 for Mac/Office 2008 for Mac/Open XML File Format Converter for Mac/Office Compatibility Pack

The bulletins will be released on Tuesday at 10:00am PDT, and there will be the usual webcast the following day at 11:00am PDT to address customer questions.

Mating game: Too much choice will leave you lonely

Mating game: Too much choice will leave you lonely
March 2, 2011 by Winnie Andrews

Scientists have made a surprising discovery: The more options you have for choosing a lover, the likelier you are to end up with no-one.

Scientists have made a surprising discovery: The more options you have for choosing a lover, the likelier you are to end up with no-one.

British investigators, in a new study released on Wednesday, looked at the strange dynamics of choice in speed-dating, a fashionable way for singles to meet.

Speed-daters race through a rota of one-on-one meetings, judging each person for suitability after a conversation of a few minutes that ends when a bell sounds.

Assessing large numbers of candidates was not a problem in itself, the researchers found.

In fact, many speed-daters found more potential partners when they were able to cast their net into a larger pool.

But this advantage only worked when the available candidates were all broadly similar.

When candidates were too dissimilar, speed-daters became confused by many conflicting factors -- and often failed to choose anyone.

"There are models of human 'rationality' which posit that variety is a good thing," said researcher Alison Lenton at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

"What will be surprising to some people is that our results suggest that increasing option variety leads to chooser confusion. People are more likely to choose no-one at all when faced with greater variety."

The study, published in the British journal Biology Letters, tracked 1,868 female and 1,870 male participants at 84 commercial speed-dating events.

Hopeful singles gave details of their occupation, education level, age, height, weight and religious affiliation, allowing researchers to gauge differences.

The women's mean age was 34.3 years and men were aged 35.6. Twenty percent of women and 27 percent of men were in professional or managerial positions, and the remainder classified themselves as "skilled non-manual" or other occupations.

Speed-daters met in groups and engaged in three-minute encounters with between 15 and 31 singles of the opposite sex.

After the event, the organiser matched up individuals who indicated a mutual interest in each other, thus opening the way to a possible date.

Big speed-dating events typically generated 123 such "proposals," or shows of interest, when candidates were similar, the researchers found. But the number dropped by more than a quarter, to 88, when candidates were varied.

Small speed-dating events would lead to 85 proposals when candidates were similar. But this fell by nearly a third, to 57 proposals, when candidates were varied.

Men were generally keener than women in formulating a proposal -- but were also likelier to be stumped by choice.

In short, variety is fine... but in manageable doses.

"Dealing with variety requires attention and memory, and we have only so much capacity for each," Lenton explained in an email with AFP.

Extending encounters by 10 minutes might not greatly change results, she said.

"It is extremely common for us to make quick judgments about other people, even in a matter of seconds. And once those judgments are formed, they can be difficult to change."

Amber Soletti, who runs a speed-dating company in New York, said grouping singles by interest or physical preferences boosted chances of a successful connection.

Her company, OnSpeedDating.com, offers 75 niche groups, such as "Asian Persuasion," "Fitness Singles" and "Worldly Singles" who like to travel.

Soletti started the company after failing to find anyone of interest at general speed-dating events.

"I only like to date men 6-foot-1 (1.85 metres) and taller. I always went to single events that had shorter men, so I didn't find anyone," she said by phone.

But now, "If I go to our tall event, I have a better chance of meeting someone," she said.

"People know what they like."

UOB to hire 2,000 this year

UOB to hire 2,000 this year
By Rachel Kelly | Posted: 25 February 2011 2234 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore lender United Overseas Bank (UOB) is planning to hire some 2,000 staff in Singapore and the region this year.

The bank said it would mainly be targeting sales and branch network support growth.

The bank is looking to triple its assets under management -- currently at S$40 billion for individuals with assets of $200,000 and above -- by 2015.

The lender is also targeting 50 per cent of its wealth management business to come from the region - up from the current 20 per cent.

UOB said it plans to expand its network of wealth management centres from the current 29 to 64, and profit contributions from mass affluent and high net-worth individuals to grow from 35 per cent to 50 per cent by 2015.

Analysts said that they expect Singapore's lenders to look more to the region for growth.

Improved economic conditions lifted the earnings of Singapore's three lenders in 2010.

Fitch Ratings' Financial Institution director Alfred Chan said UOB, DBS and OCBC reported an improved earnings year-on-year.

"This, I believe, is in line with the broader economic trend. There wasn't any unexpected results that came out of this 2010 results.

"I think what is clear is that asset quality pressures that was clearly an issue in the mid of the recession has clearly eased since mid-2009 with the sharp rebound in exports and GDP.

"That's shown in the strong GDP numbers and that flowed in 2010 and banks being the organ of the economy mirrors that kind of economy".

DBS's profit for the full-year grew 28 per cent, while OCBC's grew 15 per cent.

UOB reported on-year growth of 42 per cent and UOB, the last of the three banks to report its earnings, is looking to expand aggressively overseas.

UOB deputy chairman and CEO Wee Ee Cheong said: "I'm happy with the result but I think we can do a lot more.

"What we are doing in the region is to integrate our regional branches to create a common platform and we are transforming a collection of banks into a fully integrated region of banks.

"That is important for us because it is win -in for both customer as well as bank and I believe the next few years, the region is the one that will generate a lot of potential benefit for us".

While 2010 was a good year for Singapore's three lenders, analysts said they expect in 2011, property curbs in the Singapore market to limit growth for the bank's loan portfolio.

However, UOB said it expects its loan book to grow in the mid teens for 2011.

Analysts said with Singapore's saturated market, the regional approach is the way to go.

Fitch Rating's Mr Chan said: "I think the emphasis will change somewhat - Singapore is a very mature banking system, so there is a lot of competition.

"Banks may choose to grow a bit more outside of Singapore where credit opportunities are more, particularity Indonesia because it is a fast growing market and because of the fast growing population there, there is a lot of potential.

"But risks are also much higher in comparison to Singapore, so banks have to manage those carefully".

With consumers also seeking to tap into the growth in other emerging economies such as China, UOB is the latest local bank to announce plans to offer products denominated in the Chinese yuan to retail investors, from the first week in March.

Rising cost of living is Singapore's top concern: survey

Rising cost of living is Singapore's top concern: survey
Posted: 17 February 2011 2333 hrs

SINGAPORE: The rising cost of living is what Singaporeans are most concerned about, based on feedback gathered by the government's e-engagement platform, REACH.

The inputs were collected over the past two months ahead of Budget 2011, to be delivered by Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Friday.

Besides bread-and-butter issues, Singaporeans have also suggested ways to continue growing the economy and building a better home for all Singaporeans.

To gather feedback on the Budget announcement, various REACH channels will be opened online.

These include a dedicated REACH online discussion forum for Budget issues, webchats, email, SMS, Twitter, and Facebook.

A new initiative called Insights will also be introduced this year, where netizens can get expert opinion and more in-depth discussion on the Budget.

Members of the public may also tune in to Talkback on 938LIVE on Monday, February 21.

REACH Supervisory Panel Chairman Dr Amy Khor and Vice Chairman Dr Maliki Osman will be sharing and engaging callers on their views on the Budget.

The REACH Roving Exhibition has also been revamped to include a new look and more interactive elements to engage visitors.

The exhibition will be set up in the heart of the business district next week to engage professionals, managers, executives and businessmen and solicit their views on Budget 2011.

REACH will also be hosting three webchats in English, Malay and Chinese to seek views from the public on the Budget.

Asians more likely to use e-mail for romance: Microsoft survey

Asians more likely to use e-mail for romance: Microsoft survey
By Dylan Loh | Posted: 13 February 2011 2149 hrs

SINGAPORE: Valentine's Day is on Monday but being a working day, some may be hard-pressed to find time for romance. E-mail may be the quick fix for those seeking romance.

A survey conducted in Asia and Europe by software giant Microsoft said three in 10 Asians exchange images with their love interest via e-mail. This compared to Europe, where the figure is two in 10.

The survey also revealed that a third of Asians said "I love you" for the first time via e-mail. The survey polled over 9,000 people in six countries across Asia.

About four in 10 Asians have romanced electronically. The same number have confessed to also flirting with co-workers through email.

By contrast, only 17 per cent of Europeans polled tried an e-romance.

While some may like expressing their love via electronic means, like e-mail or social media platforms, it's clear that there are a few who are a little bit more "old school".

Alfred and Angel Lam, who have been married for two years, took a trishaw ride together with other couples as a way to express their love.

Mr Lam said: "It's more original because not everybody would do this kind of things, like taking the trishaw to go out."

Old-fashioned or not, it seems everyone has their means of expressing love in a heartfelt way.

Long queues at banks after LNY

Long queues at banks after LNY
By Lip Kwok Wai | Posted: 08 February 2011 1832 hrs

SINGAPORE: The rush to exchange new notes at banks before the Lunar New Year may be over, but days after the festivities, queues are still forming at banks around Singapore.

This time, customers are queueing to bank in their "hong bao", or red packet money collected over the Lunar New Year.

Some banks said they saw customer numbers double over the past two days.

One bank in Toa Payoh, for instance, saw more than 10 customers queueing as early as 10.30 am, half an hour ahead of its opening time.

Many said they wanted to deposit their children's "hong bao" money in a bank, rather than keep them at home.

To manage the surge, OCBC Bank said it had deployed senior staff from its headquarters to help out at neighbourhood branches, which are the most affected during this period.
