The law professor embroiled in a sex-for-grades trial said that the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) officers who recorded his statements included details he could not have made.

SINGAPORE: The law professor embroiled in a sex-for-grades trial on Thursday said that the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) officers who recorded his statements included details he could not have made.

Tey Tsun Hang, 41, is defending himself against six counts of corruptly obtaining gratification in the form of gifts and sex from his then-student Darinne Ko Wen Hui, 23, between May and July 2010 in return for lifting her grades.

CPIB investigator Wilson Khoo and deputy director Teng Khee Fatt testified in court on Thursday.

Tey said that he could not have told Mr Teng that the board of examiners was meeting soon, in relation to the final ranking of the National University of Singapore’s students.

This was because the board was scheduled to meet on 24 May, the day the statement in question was taken.

Mr Teng however disagreed, saying that Tey told him this during the recording of the statement.

Tey also said Mr Teng excluded many important details from his investigation diary.

For example, Mr Teng instructed his officers to make copies of Tey's two cheque books; Tey had previously said the cheque book entries showed he paid Ms Ko for the gifts.

Based on the examples, Tey said the investigation diary could not be taken at face value.

However Mr Teng countered that the exclusion of some details from the diary did not make the entries untrue.

The trial continues.

No change to Singapore dollar policy says MAS

No change to Singapore dollar policy says MAS

    POSTED: 12 Apr 2013 8:30 AM

No change to Singapore dollar policy says MAS in view of Core Inflation expected at 1.5-2.5 per cent and ongoing economic restructuring.

Singapore: The Monetary Authority of Singapore is keeping its Singapore dollar policy unchanged at its half-yearly review.

In a release on Friday morning, the MAS said it will maintain its policy of a modest and gradual appreciation path of the Singapore dollar policy band, last set in October 2012.

It said that there will be no change to the slope and width of the policy band, as well as the level at which it is centred.

"This policy stance is assessed to be appropriate for containing inflationary pressures, anchoring inflation expectations, and facilitating the restructuring of the economy towards sustainable growth" said the MAS in a statement.

The move was expected by most economists with an eye on Singapore and the Singapore dollar responded with little change against the US dollar following the release of the central bank's statement.

The MAS also said in its statement that for the whole of 2013, it is lowering it forecast for Core Inflation from 2-3 per cent to 1.5-2.5 per cent, largely due to the weaker-than-expected price increases over the past few months.

The MAS noted that Core Inflation, which excludes private road transport and accommodation costs, receded to 1.5 per cent y-o-y in January-February 2013, from 2.0 per cent and 2.4 per cent in Q4 and Q3 2012..

Over the same period, CPI-All Items inflation averaged around 4 per cent.

Law prof in sex-for-grades trial disputes recorded CPIB statement

Law prof in sex-for-grades trial disputes recorded CPIB statement

The law professor accused of corruptly obtaining gifts and sex from a former student on Friday continued to take issue with words and phrases in his statement recorded by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).

SINGAPORE: The law professor accused of corruptly obtaining gifts and sex from a former student on Friday continued to take issue with words and phrases in his statement recorded by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).

Tey Tsun Hang, 41, faces six allegations that he obtained gifts and sex from his former student, 23-year-old Darinne Ko, in return for giving her better grades between May and July 2010.

On Friday morning, Tey said he could not have used the words "corrupt intent" in the statement recorded by CPIB's Deputy Director Teng Khee Fatt, much less volunteer the definition of those words, "so he could be nailed on the wall".

"So are you seriously proposing a person under interrogation would want to volunteer to you, to describe to you in great detail, detailed meaning ‘of corrupt intent’ so he could be nailed on the wall?" said Tey.

Mr Teng replied Tey had used the words "with corrupt intent" in his previous statements and he was trying to find out from Tey what he had meant by it.

But Tey argued that Mr Teng had given "the most ludicrous proposition for a person under interrogation and psychoactive medication to volunteer the minute definition exercise of ‘corrupt intent’, so as to help himself be nailed on the wall". Mr Teng repeated that Tey had told him so.

Tey also accused Mr Teng of typing some paragraphs himself but the witness said that "was exactly what Professor Tey had told me" to do.

Tey, a former district judge, said throughout on Thursday and Friday Mr Teng's "linguistic expressions" used in court "are similarly manifested in all three statements" he had recorded on 17, 18 and 24 May 2012. Mr Teng disagreed.

A phrase raised during the hearing was described by Tey as "downright nonsensical" - "Bad faiths mean wrong conscientious".

Mr Teng again said it was what Tey had wanted to put in the statement.

In an earlier statement, Tey had said he had given better grades to Ms Ko for two papers, in Personal Property Law as well as Equity and Trust.

In his later statement recorded by Mr Teng, he was allowed to retract that point.

On Friday, Tey said it was because by then, Mr Teng had already received information from the National University of Singapore that the alteration of grades in those two modules "had no basis whatsoever".

Mr Teng explained that Tey was "trying to confuse" him by telling him that he changed Ms Ko's grades at first and saying he did not later.

The trial continues.

Singapore central bank stands pat as economy shrinks

Singapore central bank stands pat as economy shrinks

The Monetary Authority of Singapore says it is maintaining a modest and gradual appreciation of the Singapore dollar, despite the contraction in Singapore's Gross Domestic Product in the first quarter of this year.

SINGAPORE: Despite the contraction in Singapore's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first quarter of this year, the central bank is leaving its tight monetary policy unchanged.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) says it is maintaining a modest and gradual appreciation of the Singapore dollar.

"This policy stance is assessed to be appropriate for containing inflationary pressures, anchoring inflation expectations, and facilitating the restructuring of the economy towards sustainable growth," MAS said in its latest half-yearly review of its monetary policy on Friday.

Many economists had expected the MAS to stand pat on its policy.

In the April review of its monetary policy, the MAS said it would continue to allow the Singdollar to appreciate at a modest and gradual pace.

Economists said that apart from fighting inflation, the tight monetary policy will help facilitate economic restructuring.

Credit Suisse's director for non-Japan Asia economics, Robert Prior-Wandesforde, said: "Clearly they are worried about inflation, in particular the tightness of the labour market and the fear that it will lead to higher wage growth and in turn higher inflation. I suspect also that the central bank is trying to force some structuring adjustments in some of these exporting companies - basically, force them further up the value chain into new and more profitable areas."

Some economists say exporters which are not competitive will continue to find the going rough as Singapore's real exchange rate is likely to remain strong.

United Overseas Bank economist Francis Tan said: "Our projection for the (US) dollar-Singdollar at the end of this year is 1.22. However we see that there are some renewed risks in the eurozone. With that, we think that the dollar-Singdollar may possibly go up to 1.26 by the end of the second quarter this year before going on the downward trend towards 1.22 by the end of the year."

Despite the GDP contraction in the first quarter, MAS said the Singapore economy should grow at a modest pace this year, as external demand recovers.

The central bank also cut its inflation forecast for 2013, reflecting weaker price increases in recent months.

Measures to rein in housing costs and car prices should also help keep inflation in check.

For the full year, MAS projects core inflation, which excludes housing and private transportation costs, to come in at 1.5 to 2.5 percent - down from its earlier estimates of 2 to 3 percent.

The headline inflation (CPI-All Items inflation) has also been lowered from 3.5 to 4.5 percent to 3 to 4 percent.

Now that the MAS has downgraded its inflation forecast for the year, some economists say there may be some room for the central bank to loosen its monetary policy in the next review in October.

But a lot will depend on the labour market conditions as well as economic outlook in the latter part of the year.

Singapore job market remains tight: economists

Singapore job market remains tight: economists

By S Ramesh
POSTED: 12 Apr 2013 9:06 PM

Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) chief Stephen Lee and economists say Singapore's job market remains tight, especially in the rank-and-file jobs.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's manufacturing plants can boost production quite quickly if external demand improves, especially in Southeast Asia and the United States.

That's the view of the president of the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) Stephen Lee and economists who commented on the flash GDP estimates for the first quarter of 2013.

They added that Singapore's job market remains tight.

One economic data which the business community is closely watching is the contraction in the manufacturing sector, said National University of Singapore (NUS) economist Associate Professor Shandre Thangavelu.

He said: "We need to monitor this very closely, whether these shocks are systemic to Singapore or whether they are regional based.

"If they are regional based, then there are good signs that we can recover in the second quarter especially if the US economy picks up.

"If it is systemic just to Singapore, which means some policy adjustments within the economy in terms of foreign workers might be giving us a little bit more downside risks, that we have to monitor closely."

Local businesses are still focusing on how they can improve productivity, said SNEF president Stephen Lee.

He said: "The positive point is that many SMEs have already gone through the recognition that the adjustment of foreign worker policy is here to stay and therefore they are now turning their attention more to how to improve their operations and how to get more businesses, rather than trying to apply and re-apply for more foreign workers.

"The PIC (Productivity and Innovation Credit) scheme is the most used and we continue to educate our members to tap into the other schemes. I am hopeful that the members will make better use for the schemes."

Another important factor which economists monitor closely in Singapore is the state of the job market and they said the job market is still healthy, in fact, tight.

Companies are still finding it difficult to get workers to fill up job positions in their firms.

Mr Lee explained: "The tightness is especially in the rank-and-file type of work. From the MOM (Ministry of Manpower)survey, the job vacancies are currently 30 percent in the PME jobs and 70 percent in the rank-and-file jobs.

"It also depends on the GDP. If the GDP figure performs worse than we anticipate, then I expect the demand will somehow ease."

Economists also feel it is premature to tell if the Singapore government would revise its 2013 GDP forecast of between one and three percent.

BUSTED: Sex on Google Street View in South Australia

BUSTED: Sex on Google Street View in South Australia

Google Street View
A couple were busted having sex on the side of the road by a Google Street View car.
A SOUTH Australian couple has been busted by Google Street View getting frisky on the side of the road.
But is it just a stunt?

A Reddit user found the image of the couple having sex on the boot of their car and posted it online this morning.
The dirty deed occurred on the side of Dukes Highway in South Australia, according to Google Street View.
The image depicts the couple balancing on the hood of their BMW, hamming it up for the camera as the Google Street View car drove by.
Whether they were doing the bad thing for real, we'll never know. It seemed to be a fairly short show, as the couple can be seen moving towards the left side of the vehicle as the car drives away.
Google Street View has since censored the image.
Now we'll never know if they were faking it.

A couple in rural Australia made the most of an appearance by the Google Street View van recently by pretending to have sex for the camera.
The couple were driving on Dukes Highway in Keith, South Australia, when they apparently saw or passed the Google Maps car.
Thinking quickly they pulled to the side of the road, and made a lewd, though humourous, pose in front of their car.

We're assured by most reports that the pose was a joke - but we've blurred it for good measure. The uncensored picture can be seen here.
As the car pulls away the couple can be seen laughing and running back to their vehicle.
Needless to say the original picture has now been heavily blurred on Google Maps:

Google Street View Captures Roadside Sex In Australia [NSFW Photos]

Google Street View Captures Roadside Sex In Australia [NSFW Photos]
Folks perusing Google Street View find all sorts of strange things in random corners of the world, but how about a couple having sex on the hood of a BMW?
A Google Street View shot in what appears to be the-middle-of-nowhere Australia, a man and a woman are snapped doing the deed on the hood of their parked BMW vehicle. The woman is grimacing hilariously, and the man appears to be tipping back a beer, having a grand ol’ time.
In case you haven’t figured it out by now, this shot was completely staged.
Regardless, the shot made rounds online, including on the content and link sharing forum Reddit, where thousands of viewers pushed it to the front page. One user stepped forward and claimed the photo.
“That’s me and my missus,” said user benxology. “We saw the Google car on the way to Adelaide a couple of years ago.”
He continued: “I sped up, overtook the car then posed with a Corona in hand. I pinned the location in Maps to remember where it was to later check but never found it. Hilarious!”
How did he know how what a Google Maps car looks like? I turn the question to you, have you ever seen one? They’re pretty hard to mistake.
Google car
They’re about as subtle as a Batmobile. If you see one, act, because you won’t get another chance.
In any case, it’s too bad they didn’t keep up the charade for a little bit longer. After the Google Maps car passed, it caught another picture of the couple scrambling to pull their pants up and get back in the car.

This isn’t the first time the human condition in all its weirdness has been captured by a Google Maps vehicle. Previous captures have included this, from Germany:

Couple Sex On Google Street View

There are people who probably don't mean to be caught having sex for all the Internet to see, and then their are these two.
A couple in Australia seem to have seen the Google Street View cars coming and prepared for their big moment in viral infamy by having apparently fake sex on the side of the road.
Here's what Google Street View caught:

couple sex on google street view

As astute readers will no doubt notice, it doesn't look like these two are actually bumping uglies down under. But the guy does appear to have a beer, so he's got that going for him (hopefully he's not the one driving).
Sometimes Google catches actual intimate acts that weren't meant to be seen, like this gentleman who was caught apparently getting manual stimulation from a sex professional.

Couple Spots Approaching Google Street View Car; Stops By the Side of the Road to Have Sex

You're driving through South Australia along Dukes Highway, just down the road from Keith and District Motorcycle Club, when you suddenly spot the Google Street View car in the offing.
You only have a few seconds to come up with a truly great photobomb that will be immortalized by the Google Maps servers (until Google deletes it, that is).
Here's an idea: Why not park your bimmer by the side of the road, step out of the car, drop trou, and pretend to bang your significant other on the hood while downing a Corona.
Made it, Ma! Top of the world.
