Brisbane dad hired underage prostitute for son

A Brisbane father has been convicted of hiring an underage prostitute for his 13-year-old son on a family holiday to Thailand.

He is believed to be the first person charged under child sex tourism laws introduced in 2010 and aimed at stopping Australian pedophiles from exploiting foreign children.

The episode happened during a trip to the resort island of Koh Samui for a friend's wedding in September 2012, the Courier Mail.

The father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, got drunk at the buck's party and told his son he did not want him returning to Australia "without losing his virginity," the Brisbane District Court heard.

He then paid a prostitute, inspected the room to make sure there were condoms and waited downstairs while his son had sex.

He then told the boy not to tell his mother, who was holidaying with them in Koh Samui.

The mother did find out, however, and made a formal complaint to police after an "acrimonious" marriage split.

The father later pleaded guilty to procuring a child to engage in sex outside Australia.

Yesterday his defence barrister said his client realised his behaviour was wrong and a psychologist treating him for depression had concluded there was no risk of reoffending.

The father was sentenced to 12 months in jail but released on a $2000, two-year good behaviour bond.

Upskirt video fanatics sometimes share their spoils on websites that attract contributors from Singapore, Japan and as far away as the US.

But many are not interested in just viewing the videos. The thrill is in the filming.

Such offences are on the rise, District Judge Christopher Goh said last month when sentencing a former systems technician who was caught filming an upskirt video.

Psychologists and addictions specialists say these perpetrators are not crazy, but do it as a way of coping with their problems.

Named after a famous Greek island, The Santorini condominium was launched late last month, to little fanfare.

The 597-unit condomium project in Tampines was the only major launch in March, but despite the low competition, sales at the 99-year-lease development were slow.

A total of 80 out of 200 units were sold, mostly one- and two-bedders, said a spokesman for The Santorini.

The average selling price was $1,100 psf.

Developers are having to become increasingly aggressive in pushing sales in a cooling property market.

Last Sunday afternoon, The Santorini held a seminar and carnival at the show-flat, inviting lawyers, bankers and PropNex chief executive Mohamed Ismail to provide advice to potential buyers.

But when The New Paper visited the show-flat at Tampines Avenue 10 at about 4pm, the place was only about half-filled and there were more property agents than potential buyers there.
