Semiconductor firms urged to work with public research institutes
Semiconductor firms urged to work with public research institutes
It is hoped that with a more systematic approach to determine research areas in semiconductors, Singapore will be able to tap new advances in technology.
POSTED: 13 Oct 2015 23:16
SINGAPORE: Semiconductor firms should work more closely with public research institutes, so as to strengthen Singapore as a hub for semiconductor manufacturing - this was one of the recommendations contained in a White Paper by the Singapore Semiconductor Vision 2020 Task Force.
Other recommendations included enhancing labour productivity and improving the talent pipeline. The task force comprises representatives from organisations including A*STAR, Applied Materials SEA, GLOBALFOUNDRIES Singapore, the Institute of Microelectronics, Lantiq Asia Pacific, Micron, Singapore Economic Development Board, SSMC and STATS ChipPAC.
The task force hopes that by adopting a more systematic approach to determine research areas in semiconductors, it will help Singapore tap new advances in technology as well as trends such as the Internet of Things.
Said Mr Russell Tham, regional president for Applied Materials and chairman of the Singapore Semiconductor Vision 2020 Task Force: "Singapore's ability to collaborate between the public and private sector is certainly a unique strength.
“I can tell from our experiences, the collaborations that we had create a unique competitive advantage for the company - by leveraging A*STAR's research institutes, by leveraging the ability to construct models that are complementary to Singapore's interests.”
The semiconductor industry employs over 40,000 people in Singapore and has annual output of around S$50 billion.

Occasional slight haze expected on Thursday: NEA
Occasional slight haze expected on Thursday: NEA
The 24-hour PSI for the next 24 hours is also expected to be in the Moderate range, but may enter the low end of the Unhealthy range if winds are unfavourable, the agency adds.
POSTED: 14 Oct 2015 17:56
SINGAPORE: Prevailings winds are forecast to blow from the southeast on Thursday (Oct 15), and occasional slight haze can be expected, said the National Environment Agency (NEA).
In an advisory, the agency said that there was an improvement in the haze and visibility conditions on Wednesday "due to showers over Singapore and the surrounding sea areas in the pre-dawn hours". It added that the prevailing winds were forecast to continue blowing from the east-southeast throughout the day. At 5pm, the 24-hour PSI was 90-103, which is in the high end of the Moderate range and low end of the Unhealthy range.
NEA said that given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. It added that the elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise such activity, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid it altogether.

CapitaLand confirms talks to buy Asia Square Tower 1
The deal involving the consortium of property developer CapitaLand and the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund could value Asia Square Tower 1 at more than S$3.5 billion, reports Bloomberg News.
POSTED: 14 Oct 2015 17:00
SINGAPORE: Southeast Asia's biggest property developer, CapitaLand, on Wednesday (14 Oct) confirmed news reports that it was involved in talks to buy the Asia Square Tower 1 office building.
Its statement to the stock exchange came a day after Bloomberg News said a consortium of Norway's sovereign wealth fund and CapitaLand has been chosen as the preferred bidder for the 43-storey office building in Singapore's central business district. Bloomberg said the deal could value Asia Square Tower 1 at more than S$3.5 billion.
CapitaLand said that as discussions are still ongoing, there is no certainty that a transaction will materialise.
Should the deal proceed, CapitaLand said it anticipates drawing upon internal sources of funds and available credit lines. As of Jun 30, 2015, CapitaLand had about S$3.5 billion in cash and cash equivalents and approximately S$3.1 billion in available undrawn credit facilities.
Asia Square Tower 1, which is owned by asset manager BlackRock, counts Citigroup and Swiss private bank Julius Baer among its main tenants.
