SINGAPORE: There is a possibility that Singapore could experience slightly hazy conditions in the next few days if hotspot activities increase in southern Sumatra and the winds become unfavourable, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Sunday (Sep 11).
In an advisory, NEA said the prevailing winds are forecast to blow from the south or southwest and relatively dry weather conditions are expected for southern Sumatra.
According to NEA, 28 hotspots were detected mainly in southern Sumatra on Sunday. No visible smoke plume or haze was observed in the vicinity of the hotspots, it added.
The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) for the next 24 hours is forecast to stay in the Moderate range. As at 5pm today, the 24-hr PSI was 51-55.
Thundery showers are expected in Singapore on Monday late morning and early afternoon.
NEA added that given the air quality forecast for the next day, everyone can continue with normal activities, while those who do not feel well - especially the elderly and children, and those with chronic heart or lung conditions - should seek medical attention.

SINGAPORE: Prevailings winds are forecast to blow from the southeast on Thursday (Oct 15), and occasional slight haze can be expected, said the National Environment Agency (NEA).
In an advisory, the agency said that there was an improvement in the haze and visibility conditions on Wednesday "due to showers over Singapore and the surrounding sea areas in the pre-dawn hours". It added that the prevailing winds were forecast to continue blowing from the east-southeast throughout the day. At 5pm, the 24-hour PSI was 90-103, which is in the high end of the Moderate range and low end of the Unhealthy range.
NEA said that given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. It added that the elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise such activity, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid it altogether.

SINGAPORE: The hazy conditions that affected Singapore on Saturday (11 Oct) are likely to persist, even though thundery showers are expected on Sunday afternoon (12 Oct).
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said this is due to smoke haze from the surrounding region blown in by the prevailing winds.
Air quality hovered in the "unhealthy" range overnight - at 105 at 1am, and at 108 at 2am and 3am on Sunday. It started slipping to the "moderate" range at 6am, with a reading of 99.
NEA said the overall 24-hour PSI for Singapore is expected to fluctuate between the high end of the "moderate" range and the low end of the "unhealthy" range.
Those who are likely to fall ill due to the haze should reduce or avoid outdoor activities and physical exertion, said NEA.

SINGAPORE: Slightly hazy conditions continued on Saturday, with the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reaching the moderate range.
The 3-hour PSI reading was at 58 as of 9pm.
The reading was in the “good” range in the morning but inched up steadily after 12 pm.
On Friday, the PSI peaked at 71, which is in the moderate range.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said the haze may be attributed to hotspots to the north of Singapore, blown in by the prevailing northeasterly winds.
A total of four hotspots were detected in Peninsular Malaysia on Friday, and 35 in Sumatra.

Haze and cough
Well, these few days saw the burning smell getting stronger and stronger. My cough unfortunately, instead of getting better, it becomes worse due to the haze. The haze maybe due to the hotspots around the region.
Hopefully, the rain comes and clear off the haze.

As at 8pm, the three-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) was in the moderate range of 71. The 24-hour PSI was between 42 and 50, while the PM2.5 was between 29 to 33 μg/m3.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said PSI readings have been elevated since 5pm.
The haze may be due to hotspots to the north of Singapore, blown in by the prevailing northeasterly winds, said the NEA. A total of four hotspots were detected in Peninsular Malaysia today, and 35 hotspots in Sumatra.

Cough and Haze
It is getting hotter and hazier. Looking around, some of the plants are turning yellow or yellowish.
However, this funny weather brings more misery to me. =( Instead of getting better, my coughing becomes worse. This is partly of the haze in neighbouring countries and some of the vegetation fires in some parts of Singapore.
I hope I don't feel hazier because of this hot and hazy combination. I really should drink more water during this period to keep myself hydrated.

SINGAPORE — The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) today (March 4) inched above 50 into the “moderate” range for the first time in more than two months.
As of 6pm, the 3-hour PSI reading was 55.The 3-hour PSI reading first hit 51 past 11am before going down again before 2pm.
The 24-hour PSI, which reflects PSI readings over a 24-hour period, was between 42 and 50 at 6pm.
Singapore saw its PSI reading hit a record 401, which is in the ‘hazardous’ range, last June.
Separately, the Ministry of Health (MOH) assured the public that there are sufficient N95 masks, if the haze returns.
Parliamentary Secretary for Health Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim gave the assurance in Parliament today, saying N95 masks are currently available at major retail outlets.
“If you look at the inventory of the major retailers, we have about 280,000 N95 masks. Nevertheless, for the national stockpile, we have 16 million N95 masks,” said Dr Faishal.
The MOH has also worked with the People’s Association on plans to distribute the N95 masks to the needy through grassroots organisations.
Dr Faishal also said the criteria for the distribution of masks will be reviewed together with the relevant ministries.
He was responding to a question by Non-Constituency Member of Parliament, Mr Yee Jenn Jong, on the stock of N95 masks.
Dr Faishal also urged the public to follow the recommendations in health advisories issued by the Ministry of Health during a haze situation.
N95 masks are generally not needed for short exposure, such as commuting from home to school or work. They are also not needed in an indoor environment.

This is due to the accumulation of particulate matter under stable atmospheric conditions, particularly in the morning.
NEA said a total of 62 hotspots were detected in Sumatra on Thursday.
And smoke plumes and haze were visible in Riau province.
Channel NewsAsia received some complaints of a strong 'smoke smell' lingering in the air.
On Monday, NEA said the current dry weather conditions have led to a number of vegetation fires in Singapore over the past weeks.
These fires could possibly have contributed to the burning smell detected in some areas.
NEA said fair and warm conditions are expected for the next few days.

Fruits, Lunch, Cough, Haze?
I blogged that I fell sick these few days in my previous posts. After coughing badly for some days, I went to see the doctor about the cough. She gave me some cough medicine. The cough seemed to go away or so I thought.
Had lunch and went to buy some mixed fruits to replenish my daily dose of Vitamin C. Suddenly, I began to cough... coughing very badly. That is NOT good. Don't really enjoy my lunch as a result.
I should avoid having mixed fruits till I'm better. Meanwhile, some of the burning particles can be detected. Haze is still around.....

The government has no plans to roll back or stop the haze subsidy scheme. Minister of State for Health Amy Khor said this during a visit to Northeast Medical Group's Simei clinic, a participating GP clinic under the scheme.

Minister of State for Health Amy Khor said this on Monday during a visit to Northeast Medical Group's Simei clinic, a participating general practitioner (GP) clinic under the scheme.
The subsidy scheme is meant for vulnerable groups seeking treatment for haze-related ailments.
Under the scheme, which started on June 21, those in the vulnerable groups - which include the elderly and children - only need to pay S$10 if they visit the polyclinic.
Dr Khor said the scheme will continue as there is no closure to the haze situation yet, and it will remain in force for as long as needed.
Six hundred and forty-three GP clinics have now signed up under the scheme.
Dr Khor said: "We need to continue to be vigilant because the haze period is not yet over and we will need to use this lull period to strengthen further our contingency plans and make sure we are ready, if the situation were to deteriorate."
She also emphasised that the Health Ministry has contingency plans in case the haze situation returns and deteriorates badly.
She added that the haze situation has highlighted the important role of the GPs, and that they are an integral part of the healthcare system in helping to care for Singaporeans and meet the demand for healthcare services.
"This is very important because it will allow Singaporeans, particularly the vulnerable, the elderly, the needy, to access the care they need more conveniently and easily at the GPs, and be able to have the care at an affordable rate. They do not have to be deterred because of affordability concerns," she said.

SINGAPORE: Airlines have cancelled flights to the Indonesian cities of Solo and Yogyakarta because of the plumes of thick black smoke spewing from the Merapi volcano.
Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, Garuda Indonesia and AirAsia cancelled a total of seven flights on Tuesday.
Officials cited poor visibility and heavy ash on the runways of the two airports.
SilkAir said it cancelled two flights on Tuesday morning, one from Solo to Singapore, and another from Singapore to Solo.
Its flight cancellations affected some 139 passengers.
It said arrangements have been made for the affected passengers to take alternative flights.
SilkAir said that while its next flight to Solo will resume only on Thursday, it is closely monitoring the situation.
In an email reply to MediaCorp queries, Professor Chris Newhall, who is a volcano expert with the Earth Observatory at NTU, said it is still an open question whether Merapi will continue to spew ash clouds.
However, he said the Indonesian volcano is very different from the Icelandic volcano, which erupted in April this year, causing the cancellation of flights over Europe, leaving thousands of people stranded at airports.
Professor Newhall said Merapi is very unlikely to produce as much ash as the Icelandic volcano.
He said another important difference is that the ash from the Icelandic volcano was blown far downwind and across all of Europe - effectively closing the whole region.
The expert said it would be highly unlikely for Merapi to cause more airports apart from the Yogyakarta and Solo airports to close, and even then, it is unlikely that the closure will be prolonged.
Mount Merapi has been spewing ash and lava since its first big explosion on October 26.
There have been 10 eruptions since, with three small eruptions occuring on Tuesday.
Mount Merapi has killed about 38 people since its eruption last week.

However, he said the Indonesian volcano is very different from the Icelandic volcano, which erupted in April this year, causing the cancellation of flights over Europe, leaving thousands of people stranded at airports.
Professor Newhall said Merapi is very unlikely to produce as much ash as the Icelandic volcano.
He said another important difference is that the ash from the Icelandic volcano was blown far downwind and across all of Europe - effectively closing the whole region.
The expert said it would be highly unlikely for Merapi to cause more airports apart from the Yogyakarta and Solo airports to close, and even then, it is unlikely that the closure will be prolonged.
Mount Merapi has been spewing ash and lava since its first big explosion on October 26.
There have been 10 eruptions since, with three small eruptions occuring on Tuesday.
Mount Merapi has killed about 38 people since its eruption last week.
