Ex-SPH reporter gets 18 months' jail for underage sex

Ex-SPH reporter gets 18 months' jail for underage sex

The former Straits Times reporter will serve his sentence on June 24 after pleading guilty to having sex with the then 15-year-old girl.

SINGAPORE: Former Straits Times reporter Eisen Teo Guan Kuan was on Monday (June 9) sentenced to 18 months' jail for having underage sex with a girl he was mentoring.

The 29-year old was part of the SPH team producing two weekly magazines for primary and secondary school students. He mentored about a dozen student journalists at the “IN Crowd” media club, which the victim was part of.

Teo started to take a special interest in the girl, who was 15 at the time of the offences, after reading on her blog that she was depressed.

They became romantically involved in the fourth quarter of 2011. On a date to Fort Canning Park in early 2012, he suggested she perform oral sex on him in one of the toilets.

On June 23, 2012, Teo brought the girl to the Serangoon flat he shared with his wife, after telling the girl he needed her help to paint his house. After introducing her to his wife, he had sex with the victim in the study room while his wife was baking in the kitchen.

District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim told Teo he had been "audacious enough" to have done so while his wife was "metres away".

The victim, who cannot be named, attempted suicide two days later and only told her sister a few months later about sex with Teo. She made a police report in December 2012.

During sentencing, District Judge Hamidah said while Teo had pleaded guilty to his offences at the first opportunity, "leniency was out of the question" based on the aggravating factors. She added that he had clearly taken advantage of a young and immature person.

She also said that as early as 2011, Teo was aware that the girl had been mentally unwell when she confided in Teo about her depressive behaviour, which included thoughts of self harm.

In mitigation, Teo's lawyers said he was remorseful and that he was not a sexual predator.

Teo will start serving his sentence on June 24.

Resale prices, volume for non-landed private homes fall in May

Resale prices, volume for non-landed private homes fall in May

The number of resale transactions for non-landed private homes in May fell by 7.5 per cent from April, while prices dipped 0.3 per cent to mark a 17-month low, the Singapore Real Estate Exchange estimated.

SINGAPORE: Resale transactions for non-landed private residential units fell by 7.5 per cent month-on-month in May, and prices dipped slightly to mark a 17-month low since December 2012, according to Singapore Real Estate Exchange (SRX).

In its flash report for May released on Monday (June 9), SRX said an estimated 421 transactions were registered, down from the 455 transactions in April. This represented a 42.6 per cent drop from the 734 units resold in the same month last year, it added.

Commenting on this, real estate agency ERA said: "Buyers may have diverted their attention to hot new projects that were launched by developers at attractive prices, for example Commonwealth Towers, as well as projects relaunched by developers at lower revised prices such as Sky Habitat."

Overall resale prices dipped slightly by 0.3 per cent, with the city area leading the drop with 2.9 per cent and the suburbs seeing a 0.3 per cent dip. The city fringes climbed by 0.6 per cent though, the report stated.

The majority, or 16 of 25 districts, experienced negative Transaction Over X-value in May, led by District 9 (Orchard, Cairnhill, River Valley) and 14 (Geylang, Eunos), SRX said.

Bucking the trend, units in the Bukit Timah, Holland Road and Tanglin district (District 10) posted the highest positive Transaction Over X-value among districts with more than 10 transactions with S$80,000. This was followed by those in Upper Bukit Timah and Ulu Pandan (District 21) with S$29,000, it noted.

"Resale prices have continued to fall with sellers becoming more realistic about reduced demand. The private resale market remains gloomy and prices may continue to moderate to the loan curbs like the Total Debt Servicing Ratio (TDSR)," ERA said.

One dead, two hurt in Woodlands Crescent fire

One dead, two hurt in Woodlands Crescent fire

A 57-year-old man, believed to be the owner of the flat, has died after a fire broke out at a HDB flat in Woodlands Crescent.

SINGAPORE: A 57-year-old man died after a fire broke out in a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat at Woodlands Crescent early this morning (June 10).

The man, believed to be the owner of the flat, was found unconscious in the toilet. He suffered a cardiac arrest, and paramedics immediately administered CPR on him and this was continued enroute to hospital, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a statement. Firefighters also rescued another 23-year-old male and a 58-year-old female found standing on the window ledge outside one of the unit’s bedrooms. Both suffered from smoke inhalation and were sent to hospital.

About 150 residents of the affected block were evacuated from their homes, SCDF said.

SCDF said it received a call for assistance at 3.18am, and put out the fire in 20 minutes using two water jets. The fire started in one of the bedrooms of a unit in Block 788E before spreading outwards, resulting in the room being "totally damaged" and the living room "partially damaged", it added.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, SCDF added.

StarHub confirms 3G voice network disruption

StarHub confirms 3G voice network disruption

StarHub says its 3G outgoing voice call service was temporarily affected in western and central areas but has been fully restored as of 5pm.

SINGAPORE: StarHub's 3G outgoing voice call service was temporarily affected in certain western and central areas of Singapore earlier on Tuesday (June 10), but the telco says service was fully restored at 5pm.

"We are monitoring the situation closely to ensure service stability for our customers. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and thank affected customers for their patience and understanding.”

StarHub earlier said the "intermittent 3G outgoing voice call issue" was being progressively restored, after complaints from customers on its Facebook page who said they have been unable to make calls since this morning (June 10). The telco had advised affected customers to switch to 2G networks to make outgoing calls.

Facebook user Abhijeet Kulkarni said on Starhub's Facebook page: "(I've been) unable to make any outgoing calls on my phone since 9.30am today." Another customer, Frasir Chan, also wrote on the page: "We at Bendemeer area are not able to make calls."

A viewer, Gary, informed Channel NewsAsia at noon that his network had been down for around three hours and he was unable to call out using his mobile phone.
