Sales dip at dried seafood wholesale centre after relocation

Sales dip at dried seafood wholesale centre after relocation
By Ju Xinhang, Dylan Loh | Posted: 04 January 2013 2042 hrs

SINGAPORE: Dried seafood sellers who used to operate at Victoria Wholesale Centre said they have seen business dip by more than half since shifting from Bugis to their present location in Kallang.

The shift was made in April last year to accommodate the construction of the North-South Expressway.

Stallholders said business is bad as fewer customers are patronising the new premises.

The market's merchant association is introducing free shuttle bus services from Kallang MRT station to the centre next Saturday, in hopes that more people will turn up.

The association is also looking at turning the market into a one-stop shopping location for food and food-related items.

CDL Hospitality Trusts buys Angsana Velavaru resort for US$71m

CDL Hospitality Trusts buys Angsana Velavaru resort for US$71m
By Toni Waterman | Posted: 04 January 2013 2056 hrs

SINGAPORE : CDL Hospitality Trusts on Friday announced that it is buying the Angsana Velavaru resort in the Maldives from Banyan Tree Holdings for US$71 million (S$86.8 million).

This marks the trust's first resort acquisition and a new geographic market segment.

As part of the sale and leaseback agreement, CDL Hospitality Real Estate Investment Trust will grant a lease for the resort to Banyan Tree Holdings for 10 years. The resort will continue to be operated under the Angsana brand name after the acquisition.

The 113-villa resort is set on its own private island in the southern part of the Maldives archipelago.

In a conference call, Vincent Yeo, CEO of M&C REIT Management and manager of CDL Hospitality Real Estate Investment Trust, said the acquisition falls in line with its strategy to acquire quality assets which can keep up with rising Asian influence and tourism, especially Chinese travellers.

He said tourists from China have been the number one source of visitors to the Maldives since 2010 and accounted for 64 per cent of Asian tourists for the first 11 months of 2012.

The acquisition is pending approval from the relevant authorities in Maldives.

SIA asks pilots to volunteer for unpaid leave

SIA asks pilots to volunteer for unpaid leave
Posted: 05 January 2013 1305 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines has asked its captains to volunteer for unpaid leave amid a global economic slowdown that has dented long-haul travel demand, the airline said Saturday.

The move came nearly a year after the company -- considered a bellwether for the full-service airline industry -- made a similar offer to its first officers.

The airline has also frozen its intake of cadet pilots as part of a slew of cost-cutting measures.

"Singapore Airlines (SIA) began offering voluntary no-pay leave to first officers in March last year and subsequently to captains who expressed interest," company spokesman Nicholas Ionides said in a statement emailed to AFP.

SIA has "a temporary surplus of pilots and are managing it through this scheme, which is entirely voluntary", Ionides said.

He added that "the surplus of captains is limited and we regard it as temporary".

SIA has more than 2,400 pilots -- mostly captains and first officers.

The global financial crisis had led to excess capacity and slower growth that anticipated, Ionides said.

"This voluntary scheme will enable us to address the short-term surplus, while at the same time provide staff with the opportunity to take leave for personal reasons should they wish to do so," he said.

SIA saw its net profit in the first-half of the current fiscal year ending March fall by 30 per cent year-on-year, weighed down by high fuel prices and weak demand in the travel and cargo markets.

This followed a 69 per cent plunge in net profit in the carrier's financial year ended March 2012.

GIC names Lim Chow Kiat as new group CIO

GIC names Lim Chow Kiat as new group CIO
Posted: 04 January 2013 1144 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) has named Lim Chow Kiat as its next group chief investment officer, effective 1 February 2013.

GIC said in a statement on Friday that Mr Lim will succeed Mr Ng Kok Song who is retiring.

Mr Ng, 64, has spent 42 years in the management of Singapore's foreign reserves. He was appointed GIC's first group chief investment officer in 2007, where he integrated GIC's investment strategy at the portfolio level across the public and private markets, GIC said.

In his letter of appreciation to Mr Ng, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong -- who is also the chairman of GIC -- said Mr Ng made many significant contributions to GIC, including expanding GIC's remit into new investment areas, helping to review GIC's investment objectives and risk tolerance, and providing steady leadership during successive booms and crises.

After his retirement, Mr Ng will become an advisor to GIC in the role of chair of global investments. Among other advisory roles, he will also continue as a director on the Boards of GIC Asset Management (GAM), GIC Real Estate, and GIC Special Investments.

Mr Lim, 42, is currently GIC's deputy group chief investment officer. He joined the sovereign wealth fund in 1993 after graduating with first class honours in accountancy from Nanyang Technological University.

He was appointed head of GIC's Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities Department, as well as deputy president of GAM in 2008.

He became president of GAM in July 2011 and deputy group CIO in April 2012.

Mr Lim said: "Mr Ng Kok Song has been a great influence in developing the professional investment capability of GIC.

"As GCIO, my focus will be to build on that capability and ensure that the GIC investment process remains robust. The unwavering goal is to deliver the best possible long-term returns for the benefit of Singapore and Singaporeans."

S'pore girl sells sex for cash at 14 while Johor FB group offers sexual services

S'pore girl sells sex for cash at 14 while Johor FB group offers sexual services

Rennie Whang

She was in the habit of visiting pubs and clubs. At the time, she had two boyfriends and wasn't new to sex.

So when a friend suggested she entertain men for cash, she jumped at the opportunity.

She was just 14, and she received $80 for selling her body and used the money on dinner and drinks.

Across the Causeway in Johor, a new Facebook group appears to be offering the services of women as part of a Japanese concept of "compensated dating", in which men pay money or present gifts to women in exchange for sexual services.

The topic of young girls offering commercial sex was in the news after Tang Boon Thiew pleaded guilty last Thursday to running an Internet prostitution ring.

The youngest in his stable was under 18 then and 51 men were later charged with having commercial sex with an underage girl.

Dr Carol Balhetchet, the Singapore Children’s Society’s youth services director, says girls who enter the industry are tempted by material goods and the attention, which could be lacking from family or friends.

Labour squeeze: Security firm offers $10k as 'joining bonus'

Labour squeeze: Security firm offers $10k as 'joining bonus'

HERE’S $10,000 -- if you are willing to join us as a security officer.

This is what one security agency here is offering to try to stem its manpower shortage.

Since mid-December last year, Certis Cisco has put up classified advertisements offering the $10,000 "joining bonus" for experienced security officers. Another agency, Aetos, has been offering up to $8,000 as a similar bonus.

The issue of a manpower shortage in the security industry is not a new one. Neither are the bonuses, which are usually paid out over a period of time, like two to three years.

However, this is believed to be the highest amount offered so far.

Key personnel leave APB after Heineken takeover

Key personnel leave APB after Heineken takeover
By Conrad Raj, TODAY | Posted: 04 January 2013 1005 hrs

SINGAPORE: A spate of resignations among top personnel has hit Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) following its complete takeover by Heineken of the Netherlands, the world's third-largest beer maker.

APB, which makes Tiger Beer, was the subject of a fierce takeover battle last year between Heineken and Thai Beverage, with the Dutch brewer eventually emerging victorious. Heineken forked out S$5.6 billion to buy the rest of APB from its joint venture partner Fraser and Neave to secure an asset which will help it exploit the fast growth in Asia's beer market.

Among those who have left or have given notice is Mr Christopher Kidd, APB's Regional Director for Indo-China, its most profitable division. He joined APB in 1994. Others include Mr Leslie Buckley, Regional Director for South-east Asia/Oceania excluding Singapore, who joined the company in 1995, and Group Finance Director Loy Juat Boey, who has been with APB since 1987. Also gone is public relations head Sarah Koh.

The first three were among the best-paid senior managers at APB, according to the company's annual report, along with Chief Executive Roland Pirmez, Mr Vivek Chhabra, Regional Director (South Asia)/Director (Group Business Development), and Mr Bennett Neo, Regional Director for the Singapore cluster and Cambodia. Mr Neo will soon take over Mr Chhabra's South Asia portfolio of Sri Lanka.

Mr Kidd and Mr Buckley earned between S$1.25 million and S$1.5 million in the company's last financial year, according to the annual report, while Ms Loy was in the S$1-million to S$1.25-million range.

While no official reason has been given for their departure, the talk among insiders is that there has been some unhappiness with the new management style since the takeover, with changes to reporting lines and final decisions being taken at Heineken's Netherlands headquarters.

"We appear to have lost our independence and creativity as reporting is now done on a functional basis to superiors in the Netherlands," remarked an ex-insider.

Mr Kidd, 55, is said by people familiar with the situation to have been miffed when Mr Pirmez took over his portfolio as Regional Director for Indo-China.

Heineken said in reply to queries from TODAY: "We would like to stress the fact that the business is strong and that the members of APB's leadership team, who we know well, are doing a good job." Heineken also said that those who left "are not the top four executives" but that they are members of a leadership team comprising 15 people.

"Ms Sarah Koh and Mr Chris Kidd have decided to leave the company and pursue their careers outside the company. We respect their decisions and highly value their long-standing contribution to build and grow the business. Yet it is not on us to comment on personal choices," Heineken told TODAY.

The company also said that Ms Loy has taken early retirement and her portfolio has been taken over by Mr Kenneth Choo, who is also Director, Regional Finance and Business Development, of Heineken Asia Pacific.

While a search for a new corporate relations director is on, Mr Michael Dickstein from Heineken HQ will do the job in the interim.

Asked if more management changes were on the way, Heineken said: "Management changes are part of the ongoing business in any operation and we usually treat such changes in a very sensitive way."

Meanwhile, the integration process which Heineken initiated upon taking over is expected to be completed by the end of next month. This includes Heineken giving up its office at Novena Square to move to either Alexandra Point, where APB's HQ is located, or to its brewery at Tuas.

NUS student not involved in sex video, says university

NUS student not involved in sex video, says university
Posted: 05 January 2013 2149 hrs

SINGAPORE: The National University of Singapore (NUS) student that is supposedly linked to an online sex video has informed the university he is not the person featured in the video.

According to media reports, the video features a naked man masturbating and speaking to the camera.

An NUS spokesperson said the student in question made a police report in June 2012 on the matter.

The school said it has looked into the matter and interviewed the student.

It added that there was no evidence to conclude that the person featured in the video is the student involved.

In addition, NUS said it does not condone offensive or lewd behaviour by any member of its community.

It said any student found in breach of the University's Code of Student Conduct will be disciplined.

In October last year, ASEAN scholar and law undergraduate, Alvin Tan stirred controversy by posting on his blog photos and videos of him and his girlfriend having sex.
