Man catches neighbour on video dumping porridge from window

March 31, 2014 - 12:51am

Armed with a video camera, he spent two hours on his day off staking out Block 83 at Commonwealth Close, where he lives.

Mr Ken Kee’s efforts to catch the neighbour red-handed paid off two Saturdays ago when he shot a short video clip and took some photographs of a woman dumping spoonfuls of food (above) from her eighth-storey kitchen window.

Mr Kee, who works in the oil and gas industry, told The New Paper that the problem started last June, when his family’s washing got mysterious spots and splatters while being hung to dry. The Kees live in a third-storey unit.

He said: “This inconsiderate act is unforgivable and selfish. My wife and I have been tolerating this nuisance for many months. All our clothes have been stained, even my kids’ school uniforms. Some of the stains could not be washed off and the clothes had to be thrown away."

Tariffs to increase an average of 0.3% from April 1 to June 30

PUBLISHED: MARCH 31, 11:48 AM

SINGAPORE — Electricity tariffs will increase by an average of 0.3 per cent — or 0.07 cent per kWh — for the period of April 1 to June 30 this year, announced SP Services today (March 31).

This is due to a 1.3 per cent rise in fuel costs, added SP Services, which noted that the increase was mitigated by a reduction in non-fuel costs.

For households, the electricity tariff will increase from 25.65 to 25.73 Singapore cents per kWh, and the resulting monthly electricity bill for families living in four-room HDB flats will increase by S$0.26 on average. Tariffs for one-room flats will increase by S$0.09 on average, while that for bungalows will increase by S$1.73 on average.

SP Services says it reviews the electricity tariffs quarterly based on guidelines set by the Energy Market Authority (EMA), the electricity industry regulator.

Prepaid SIM cards limited to three per subscriber from tomorrow

Prepaid SIM cards limited to three per subscriber from tomorrow

Measure intends to curb the use of prepaid SIM cards for illicit activities

PUBLISHED: MARCH 31, 7:25 PM UPDATED: MARCH 31, 7:26 PM

SINGAPORE — With effect from tomorrow (April 1), the maximum number of prepaid SIM cards allowed per subscriber will be reduced from 10 to three.

The new regulation means a subscriber can only register up to a maximum of three prepaid SIM cards in total, regardless of which mobile service providers the cards are purchased from.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) first introduced regulatory controls on prepaid SIM cards in 2005.

Currently, a subscriber must be at least 15 years old, and can subscribe to up to a maximum of 10 prepaid SIM cards.

The government said criminals continue to exploit prepaid SIM cards as an anonymous channel of communications for their illicit activities, and this revised limit will reduce the security risks associated with the anonymous use of prepaid SIM cards.

MHA said fraudulently-registered prepaid cards have been used to perpetuate criminal activities including unlicensed moneylending, cheating scams, vice-related and gambling-related activities.

For example, unlicensed moneylending syndicates have been found to make use of prepaid SIM cards for communications with debtors and among syndicate members in support of their illegal activities.

This revised limit makes it more onerous for errant dealers to sell prepaid SIM cards that could potentially be used for such illegal activities.

In determining this new limit, MHA and IDA said they have consulted the mobile service providers and taken into consideration the prevailing prepaid SIM card ownership patterns among consumers.

The majority of prepaid SIM card subscribers today hold three or fewer prepaid SIM cards.

The new limit will only be applied to new prepaid SIM card registrations.

Existing subscribers can continue to use their prepaid SIM cards but will not be allowed to register additional prepaid SIM cards.
