The next release of SMS, System Center Configuration Manager 2007, is now available; see the earlier section, System Center Configuration Manager 2007.
For more information about how administrators can use SMS 2003 to deploy security updates, see Scenarios and Procedures for Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003: Software Distribution and Patch Management. For information about SMS, visit the Microsoft Systems Management Server TechCenter.
Note SMS uses the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer to provide broad support for security bulletin update detection and deployment. Some software updates may not be detected by these tools. Administrators can use the inventory capabilities of SMS in these cases to target updates to specific systems. For more information about this procedure, see Deploying Software Updates Using the SMS Software Distribution Feature. Some security updates require administrative rights following a restart of the system. Administrators can use the Elevated Rights Deployment Tool (available in the SMS 2003 Administration Feature Pack) to install these updates.
Update Compatibility Evaluator and Application Compatibility Toolkit
Updates often write to the same files and registry settings required for your applications to run. This can trigger incompatibilities and increase the time it takes to deploy security updates. You can streamline testing and validating Windows updates against installed applications with the Update Compatibility Evaluator components included with Application Compatibility Toolkit.
The Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) contains the necessary tools and documentation to evaluate and mitigate application compatibility issues before deploying Microsoft Windows Vista, a Windows Update, a Microsoft Security Update, or a new version of Windows Internet Explorer in your environment.

Gamesa opens advanced materials research centre in S'pore

Gamesa opens advanced materials research centre in S'pore
By Qiuyi Tan | Posted: 07 April 2011 1648 hrs

SINGAPORE : Spanish wind technology leader Gamesa has opened its advanced materials research centre in Singapore.

The lab is housed at the Nanyang Technological University and will focus on improving the performance of Gamesa's giant wind turbines.

Wind energy is not harnessed in Singapore, but the Economic Development Board said this research lab will put the Republic on the map for global wind energy research.

While the future of nuclear energy is now uncertain, Gamesa sees wind energy gaining space in the renewable energy portfolios of many countries.

This includes Asia, which represents 38 per cent of Gamesa's global sales today.

Jorge Calvet, chairman and CEO of Gamesa, said: "India is going to increase its investment in wind. China will continue with its very aggressive plan of investing in wind and we will see other countries in Southeast Asia coming on line with wind energy as well.

"It will not substitute any other form of renewable energy, or any other form of energy, but it will have to increase its percentage in this portfolio."

Rising affluence will drive demand for luxury cruises in Asia: experts

Rising affluence will drive demand for luxury cruises in Asia: experts
By Rachel Kelly | Posted: 08 April 2011 2259 hrs

SINGAPORE : The Asia Pacific accounts for around 7 percent of the world's cruise market.

And experts say with increasing affluence in the underpenetrated Asian markets, cruise players are keeping a weathered eye on the region and its growth potential.

As appetites pick up for more prestigious goods and services, the luxury cruise market is expected to gain the most.

Sailing the seas in luxury is becoming the holiday of choice for many in Asia.

Over the last three decades, global cruise arrivals have grown as fast as the world's overall tourist arrivals.

In Singapore, for example, cruise passenger throughput has grown steadily, registering a healthy annual growth rate of 10 percent between 2005 and 2010, and the number of ships calling on Singapore has doubled from 56 in 2005 to 100 in 2010.

Passenger throughput in Singapore last year was 1.01 million.

And as demand continues to increase, experts are forecasting the luxury cruise business to enjoy revenue growth of around 10 to15 percent in Asia Pacific this year.

Leon Perera, Group Managing Director, Spire Research and Consulting, said: "I think for the luxury segment you would expect to see much higher growth rates in the very strong double digit, and I think that is because there is a thirst for the novelty.

You see that in the number of upscale boutique resorts that are proliferating across the region not just in the core areas of Thailand and Indonesia - but even in up and coming countries such as Vietnam.

I think the high end cruise industry will benefit from that because it is one more luxury offering to the very affluent group of tourists that are growing in Asia."

Asia now accounts for 20 percent of luxury cruise provider Silversea's business and it expects the region to remain as its fastest growing customer segment.

Kenneth Watson, Chief Operating Officer, Silversea Cruises, said: "Well first of all let me give you a bit of perspective - today the cruise business worldwide is growing between 6 and 7 percent annually.

The cruise business is about a 30 billion dollar business - it represents a very important part of many other businesses that are involved in it - for example - shipyards - vendors that are providing provisions for us throughout the industry.

Where we are growing the most is here in Asia Pacific and that growth is about 25 percent and it doesn't really matter where it is in Asia Pacific but it appears that is going to be consistent for the near term - we just got some statistics from Australia and the growth in Australia was about 27 percent.

Here in Singapore the penetration for the cruise business is relatively low - small numbers - so we are anticipating much larger growth coming out of this area of the world - both as a source market for people as well as a destination."

Experts add that growth will also be underpinned by government support for the sector.

For example, Singapore will be opening up an International Cruise Terminal at the end of this year.

Keppel Corp's CEO paid between S$8m and S$8.25m last year

Keppel Corp's CEO paid between S$8m and S$8.25m last year
By Lois Calderon | Posted: 06 April 2011 2316 hrs

SINGAPORE : The chief executive officer of Keppel Corporation, Choo Chiau Beng, took home a pay package of between S$8 million and S$8.25 million last year.

This is compared to his previous year's pay of between S$11.5 million and S$11.75 million, which at the time included share options that accounted for 11 per cent of his total remuneration mix.

Mr Choo, who has been at the helm of the world's largest oil-rig builder since 2009, had his remuneration last year consisting of 14 per cent in salary, 44 per cent in bonuses paid and 42 per cent in deferred bonuses.

On top of that, Mr Choo was entitled to up to 300,000 company shares valued at S$7.08 each and another 150,000 shares worth between S$7.72 and S$8.30 apiece in 2010.

For the deferred bonuses, the company said it has adopted an incentive compensation that is deferred over a certain time horizon to ensure its executives continue to generate sustainable shareholder value over the longer term. It also awards shares based on performance targets over a one- to three-year period.

In its annual report, the conglomerate said it grew its bottom line by 12 per cent to S$1.4 billion last year from 2009's S$1.26 billion.

The company's chairman, Lee Boon Yang, noted the gains came as a surprise "given the tentative recovery at the start of 2010 as well as the unexpected events in our industries and markets in the course of the year," referring to the massive oil spill in Gulf of Mexico and property market cooling measures implemented by Singapore and China.

He expects "the external environment for 2011 will be more complex".

"Although recovery in the advanced economies seems to be gaining momentum, the outlook remains challenging and somewhat clouded over the next few years," Mr Lee added.
