942 stray dogs, 888 stray cats and 623 wild monkeys euthanised in 2015: MND

942 stray dogs, 888 stray cats and 623 wild monkeys euthanised in 2015: MND
There are an estimated 60,000 stray cats, 7,000 stray dogs and 1,900 wild monkeys in Singapore, said MND. A total of 265 dogs and 129 cats were rehomed last year.

SINGAPORE: The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) euthanised almost 2,500 animals - 942 dogs, 888 cats and 623 monkeys - in 2015, Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong said on Monday (Mar 14). Another 265 dogs and 129 cats were rehomed.

This is out of the estimated population of 60,000 stray cats, 7,000 stray dogs and 1,900 wild monkeys in Singapore, he added in response to a question by Nee Soon GRC MP Louis Ng, who is the founder of the Animal Concerns Research & Education Society.

AVA has to impound strays when the public raises safety concerns, Mr Wong said. AVA will then work with animal welfare groups to rehome the animals, while those that are not rehomed - such as aggressive or sick animals - will be humanely euthanised as a "last resort".

AVA will "continue to work with animal welfare group to rehome stray animals," Mr Wong added.

Bloggers taken by surprise by IRAS letter on taxable income

Bloggers taken by surprise by IRAS letter on taxable income
938LIVE reports: The memo received by bloggers states that all non-monetary benefits “may be taxable and must be declared”. One blogger said it was the first time she received such a letter.

SINGAPORE: Some members of Singapore’s blogging community have expressed surprise at a letter they have received from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) clarifying income components - including products or services received via their websites - which need to be declared as part of their annual Income Tax Return.

938LIVE has seen pictures of the letter in question. The memo states that all non-monetary benefits, including sponsorship of products or services received in return for writing or reviewing the sponsors’ products “may be taxable and must be declared”.

Prominent blogger Wendy Cheng, or Xiaxue, told 938LIVE this is the first time she has received such a letter from IRAS.

Ms Cheng said while she is aware that income generated from her website is subjected to tax, it is “difficult” to declare certain benefits-in-kind.

“If someone sends me a lipstick, am I supposed to go find out how much it costs and declare it? Other things like, for example, some fans give me something that’s handmade, how do I put a value on that?”

“Either that or I have to send it back to the company, but that’s very nasty. It’s like saying: 'I don’t like your product'; so it doesn’t make sense to me,” she added.

The IRAS letter sent to bloggers

Kenneth Lee, who blogs on www.5meanders.com wrote: “I think it’s sad, and a little funny, that we’ve come to a point in our country’s storied existence when a channel of expression is taxable.”

Local blogger Alvin Lim, who owns alvinology.com and asia361.com, told Channel NewsAsia the move by IRAS seemed “stringent and rather extreme”.

“If this is really true, it will kill the whole blogging scene. Who will go for food tastings now? IRAS also has to be fair to bloggers - most of us are one-man shows with no resources to do these things,” he said, adding that he presently files taxes under a registered company.

Mr Lim also noted that it would be “double standards” if the same were not applied to media companies. “Do journalists file taxes for media gifts, food tastings, family trips or media junkets?” he asked.

938LIVE understands that IRAS sent the letter as part of its regular engagement with the self-employed and is not meant to target or clamp down on bloggers.

Social media marketing firm Gushcloud said it is aware that the letter has been sent to bloggers under its management, adding that it regularly holds workshops and 1-on-1 meetings to answer their questions on the filing of their taxes.

A food blogger who declined to be identified said he has always been aware of the need to declare the benefits he received through his blog.

More information on what bloggers need to declare can be found here.

My First Skool to offer 2,000 more childcare places this year

My First Skool to offer 2,000 more childcare places this year
NTUC's My First Skool also aims to grow its enrolment to 20,000 by 2020 - up from the current 13,000 places.

SINGAPORE: Young, dual-income families can look forward to over 2,000 more childcare places in 2016, with the National Trade Union Congress' (NTUC) My First Skool opening childcare facilities in Jurong West, Punggol and Sengkang.

Each of the four centres opening this year can take in between 200 and 500 children.

My First Skool aims to grow its enrolment to 20,000 by 2020 - up from the current 13,000 places. This was announced at the opening of its newest childcare centre at Punggol Waterway Point on Tuesday (Mar 15).

NTUC's Secretary-General Chan Chun Sing, who was at the launch, said larger childcare centres give teachers the chance to pilot and try new ways of doing things. For instance, they can try out different teaching and learning pedagogies to bring out the best in every child.

"It's not just about the numbers - we're talking about people who are committed to the preschool sector and have the interests of the children at heart," he said. "But as you can see in this larger centre, it actually allows us to have economies of scale. It also makes it more attractive for the teachers to come because they're working as part of a larger team. So actually it gives us a lot of advantages to try new concepts."

Deutsche Boerse, LSE agree to go ahead with planned merger

Deutsche Boerse, LSE agree to go ahead with planned merger
Frankfurt stock exchange operator Deutsche Boerse said Wednesday it has reached an agreement with the London Stock Exchange to go ahead with their planned merger.

Posted 16 Mar 2016 16:07

FRANKFURT: Frankfurt stock exchange operator Deutsche Boerse said Wednesday (Mar 16) it has reached an agreement with the London Stock Exchange to go ahead with their planned merger and both its management and supervisory boards had consented to the key terms of the proposed tie-up.

"Following approval of the supervisory board of Deutsche Boerse, the management board of Deutsche Boerse today concluded an agreement on the implementation of a business combination with (the London Stock Exchange) LSEG under a UK holding company," the German group said in a statement.

"Moreover, the management board and the supervisory board of Deutsche Boerse consented to certain measures serving the implementation of the merger," it added.

LSEG's current Chairman Donald Brydon would be Chairman of the new company, while Deutsche Boerse's chief Carsten Kengeter would be its CEO, Deutsche Boerse and LSEG both said.

The combined companies' board would be made up of equal numbers of LSE and Deutsche Boerse directors.

The new firm, which will be domiciled in Britain, with a primary listing in the blue-chip FTSE 100, will also have a home on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and have corporate headquarters in both cities.

Nearly 16 years after their first attempt to merge, the London and Frankfurt exchanges last month confirmed they were holding detailed discussions on an all-share merger.

The deal would combine the LSE's share-trading operation with the derivatives trading of Deutsche Boerse's Eurex in a group worth $30 billion.

Their deal, however, may yet prompt a takeover battle after New York Stock Exchange owner Intercontinental Exchange said it was considering making a bid for the British firm.

LSEG, which was created in 2007 when London Stock Exchange merged with Milan stock exchange Borsa Italiana, said its shareholders would receive a dividend of 25.2 pence per LSEG share for the six month period ended Dec. 31.
