Marriage Is Good for Physical and Mental Health, Study Finds

Marriage Is Good for Physical and Mental Health, Study Finds

ScienceDaily (Jan. 28, 2011) — The 'smug marrieds' may have good reason to feel pleased with themselves as experts now confirm that long-term committed relationships are good for mental and physical health and this benefit increases over time.

In an editorial published by student BMJ, David and John Gallacher from Cardiff University say that on average married people live longer. They say that women in committed relationships have better mental health, while men in committed relationships have better physical health, and they conclude that "on balance it probably is worth making the effort."

Men's physical health probably improves because of their partner's positive influence on their lifestyle and "the mental bonus for women may be due to a greater emphasis on the importance of the relationship," they write.

But the journey of true love does not always run smoothly, maintain the authors, pointing to evidence that relationships in adolescence are associated with increased adolescent depressive symptoms.

And not all relationships are good for you, they add, referring to evidence that single people have better mental health than those in strained relationships.

They also confirm that breaking up is hard to do, saying "exiting a relationship is distressing" and divorce can have a devastating impact on individuals. Having numerous partners is also linked with a risk of earlier death.

They conclude that while relationship failures can harm health this is not a reason to avoid them. A good relationship will improve both physical and mental health and perhaps the thing to do is to try to avoid a bad relationship rather than not getting into a relationship at all.

Tampines Court to try for en bloc sale again

Tampines Court to try for en bloc sale again
By Lynda Hong | Posted: 29 January 2011 2245 hrs

SINGAPORE: Tampines Court owners are attempting an en bloc sale for the second time.

MediaCorp understands that 47 percent of the owners met on Saturday for its first Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM).

A 12-member sales committee was also formed.

The next step is for the second EOGM to decide on the marketing agents and lawyers to handle the sale, before deciding on the valuation of the estate
which spans 702,162 sq ft with 560 units.

The former HUDC estate, which is about 26 years old, was put up for a collective sale for S$405 million in 2006.

The two-year process, however, failed as its sales committee could not meet deadlines to complete the deal by 25 July, 2008.

Sungei Whampoa gets makeover

Sungei Whampoa gets makeover
By Shaffiq Alkhatib | Posted: 30 January 2011 1602 hrs

SINGAPORE: Residents living near Sungei Whampoa can now enjoy new riverside facilities such as lookout decks and a landscaped garden.

This is the result of a S$2.2 million facelift that's part of the Active, Beautiful and Clean or ABC Waters Programme which kicked off in 2006.

The project, which included the greening of canal walls along a 250-metre stretch of Sungei Whampoa from the Central Expressway to the St George's Lane HDB estate, was completed in 16 months.

The nationwide PUB initiative aims to transform places such as canals and reservoirs into community spaces.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim said 13 of such projects have already been completed around the island.

They include the Kolam Ayer ABC Waterfront, Pandan Reservoir and Jurong Lake.
