Disrupted StarHub fibre broadband services restored

Disrupted StarHub fibre broadband services restored

Customers had started leaving complaints on the telco's Facebook page from around 6pm onwards. The telco said services were "fully restored" close to midnight.

SINGAPORE: StarHub's fibre broadband and digital voice services were disrupted on Thursday (Oct 2), with services being "fully restored" as of 11.50pm.

"We are monitoring the situation closely to ensure service stability for affected customers," a spokesperson for the telco told Channel NewsAsia.

At about 9pm, StarHub had said it was aware that "some of our fibre broadband and Digital Voice (fibre) customers are facing difficulties in using the services at the moment. We are currently working to rectify this as quickly as we can". About 90 minutes later, the telco said that the affected fibre services are "now progressively being restored".

StarHub customers took to the telco's Facebook page to voice their concerns, from about 6pm onwards. Complaints came from fibre broadband customers in Yishun, Tampines, Kovan and Sembawang, who said they experienced "technical errors" when trying to connect to the Internet.

One StarHub customer, who said she had been in touch with the telco, posted on Facebook that StarHub's customer service officer told her it was an "island-wide issue".

Channel NewsAsia understands that residents in Pasir Ris and Sengkang are also affected.

Mr Alan Ang, who lives in Sengkang, told Channel NewsAsia that he started experiencing problems with his fibre broadband connection around 7pm this evening.

Interpol searching for Malaysian sex blogger Alvin Tan

Interpol searching for Malaysian sex blogger Alvin Tan

Interpol is reportedly searching for Malaysian sex blogger Alvin Tan to get him to return to the country and face trial in court. Tan is believed to have gone to Singapore in May to shoot a documentary.

SINGAPORE: Interpol is searching for sex blogger Alvin Tan to get him to return to the country and face trial in court, according to reports in the Malaysian media.

The Star quoted Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar as saying that his officers were liaising with Interpol to bring the Malaysian citizen back and get him to surrender his passport. The Malaysian Insider meanwhile reported that according to his lawyer, Tan, 25, and his partner Vivian Lee May Ling, 24, went to Singapore to shoot a documentary in May - but added that he was unsure if Tan is still in the Republic.

The couple is facing charges under the Sedition Act and the Film Censorship Act, relating to their action in posting an insensitive Ramadan greeting on their Facebook page and pornographic photographs in their blogs.

In the first charge, they were jointly accused of making a seditious posting on their Facebook page by uploading a photo of themselves eating bak kut teh (a Chinese herbal pork soup) with a caption "Selamat Berbuka Puasa" - a Malay greeting when breaking fast.

Lee and Tan, a former law student at the National University of Singapore, had sparked outrage in Malaysia and Singapore by posting erotic photographs and videos of their lovemaking as well as close-ups of their genitals on a blog.

Tan's mother, Madam All Kim Lian, as well as another bailor, Loo Ching Ching, on Saturday forfeited the RM20,000 (S$7,900) bail imposed by the Sessions Court on Tan when he did not return his passport for a third time.

Malaysian ‘sex blogger’ Alvin Tan claims he's seeking political asylum in US

Malaysian ‘sex blogger’ Alvin Tan claims he's seeking political asylum in US

Tan, who is wanted by the Malaysian authorities, says he has fled to the United States to seek political asylum. Tan and his partner Vivian Lee are facing charges under Malaysia's Sedition Act and Film Censorship Act.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian “sex blogger” Alvin Tan Jye Yee claims to have fled to the United States, where he intends to seek political asylum.

Tan, 26, and his partner, Vivian Lee May Ling, 25, are facing criminal charges under Malaysia's Sedition Act as well as the Film Censorship Act for their controversial online uploads, including a photo deemed insulting to Islam on Facebook as well as pornographic images on their blogs.

Tan - speaking to our correspondent via a personal Facebook account that Channel NewsAsia has verified belongs to the “sex blogger” - said on Wednesday (Sep 24): “I'm busy starting a new life here (in the US), apart from awaiting my final asylum hearing. I'm here to seek political refuge from the tyranny of UMNO - simple as that.”

Tan first applied for asylum-seeker status in May, after disappearing from the public eye following a documentary shoot in Singapore. He said he feels confident the US will grant him asylum - and if they do not, he claimed he will continue posting "seditious material" online to strengthen his case.

"The Department of State produced a Human Rights Report on Malaysia in 2013 which explicitly cites my case as a repression of internet speech rights," he said.

"If all else fails, I can easily publish more 'seditious' materials on my Facebook to taunt the authorities and get them to be hot on the pursuit of me again, therefore creating an even more well-founded fear of political persecution to bolster my asylum claim.”

Tan and Lee were jointly accused of making a seditious posting on their Facebook page when they uploaded a photo of themselves eating bak kut teh, a Chinese herbal pork soup, with the caption "Selamat berbuka puasa" - a Malay greeting used when breaking fast.

Tan, a former law student at the National University of Singapore, and Malaysian citizen Lee gained notoriety in Malaysia and Singapore by posting erotic photographs and videos of their lovemaking as well as close-ups of their genitals on a blog.

Malaysia regulator issues request to remove 'sex blogger' Alvin Tan's Facebook page

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission says Tan's Facebook page violated the social media network's terms and conditions, and found his actions as "distasteful".

SINGAPORE: Malaysia's Internet regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), requested Facebook to remove the page of Malaysian "sex blogger" Alvin Tan Jye Yee, claiming it is "against their terms and conditions of service".

On its Facebook page on Oct 1, MCMC Chairman Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi wrote: "We condemn the irresponsible act of Alvin Tan on Facebook and find his actions distasteful. We have made a complaint to Facebook and have requested it to immediately remove the page as we believe it is also against the terms and conditions of service."

"We remind the public to refrain from sharing sensitive content which may offend others," he added.

Tan and his ex-girlfriend, Vivian Lee May Ling, 25, are facing criminal charges under Malaysia's Sedition Act as well as the Film Censorship Act for their controversial online posts.

For instance, they were accused of making a seditious posting on their Facebook page after uploading a photo of themselves eating bak kut teh, a Chinese herbal pork soup, with the caption "Selamat berbuka puasa" - a Malay greeting used when breaking fast. They had also posted erotic photographs and videos of their lovemaking as well as close-ups of their genitals on a blog.

Last month, Tan claimed to have fled to the United States where he intends to seek political asylum.

Next-generation post offices built with the focus on digital needs

Next-generation post offices built with the focus on digital needs

The new post offices are aimed at meeting consumers' e-commerce and digital needs, such as round-the-clock facilities to post, collect or return parcels, says SingPost.

SINGAPORE: National postal service operator SingPost is revamping its post offices to meet changing lifestyles, particularly in the areas of e-commerce and digital needs.
Over the next few years, post offices will be remodelled into a "vibrant lifestyle hub" integrated with a 24/7 auto-lobby with POPStation and ezy2ship facilities to post, collect or return parcels, SingPost said in a press release on Friday (Oct 3).
Other customer-centric features introduced include user-friendly signs, packing desks where customers can pack and prepare their packages for mailing and having service ambassadors on hand during counter operating hours to assist customers with their needs.
SingPost added it had begun integrating essential services with digital access at its post offices since March this year, and the revamp will continue its streamlining initiative.
This week, it opened its eighth new concept post office at Suntec City Mall (#03-383), where SingPost is piloting a 3D printing service in collaboration with 3D Matters.
It also features a Business Solutions Centre, where customers can meet a sales representative to find out more about the range of corporate solutions offered by SingPost. Also at the outlet is an Innovation Corner, where start-ups and young entrepreneurs can showcase new business ideas.
Dr Wolfgang Baier, SingPost’s Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our new-generation customers are digitally-inclined, buying online and on-the-move, and they expect a post office experience that is digitally integrated.
"To meet their changing lifestyle, we are basically remodeling our post offices, and transforming them into modern, efficient hubs to meet their e-commerce and digital needs."
This integrated experience will also apply to other facilities such as Self-service Automated Machines (SAM), where customers can access multiple platforms including smartphones, tablets, desktop and SingPost's physical kiosks, Dr Baier added.
