Commitment triumphs over divorce despite stress factors: survey

Commitment triumphs over divorce despite stress factors: survey

SINGAPORE: Nearly half of the respondents surveyed in a recent marriage study have considered divorce at some point.

But all stuck it out due to a sense of commitment to marriage, the influence of family, friends and religious advisers, and as they worry that their children may be negatively affected in a divorce.

Professional counselling was also found to be useful.

Over 450 married individuals were surveyed in the study commissioned by Marriage Central.

The study, conducted from February to May this year, aims to identify resilience factors that can mitigate marriage crises.

It revealed the common stress points in a marriage include infidelity, interference by in-laws and differences in aspirations.

Principal investigator Dr Mathew Mathews, a research fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies, said: "It shows that there are different agents which are acting in that process -- family, the community, broader messages around and notions of commitment are all there, and I think these things help to keep couples wanting to walk through their relationship rather than giving up."

Marriage Central - a workgroup under the National Family Council - said the findings indicate that there is hope for troubled marriages in Singapore.

Marriage Central chairperson, Anita Fam, said: "I think what came through very, very clearly, was the idea of commitment - that no matter how things are, if you decide to stick it through, there's more than a fighting chance."

The workgroup intends to share the findings with voluntary welfare organisations and other stakeholders so that they may develop more resources and programmes for building resilient marriages in Singapore.

It was also well corroborated in the study that early intervention to marital problems had great merit. Hence it has been recommended that marriage preparation programmes, which target soon-to-be-married couples, incorporate a complementary post-marriage counselling session to encourage couples to discuss teething problems in their relationship early and build resiliency.

S$10 rental for a hawker stall

S$10 rental for a hawker stall

SINGAPORE: October's tender for the rental of a hawker stall saw a successful S$10 bid.

It is the lowest since the National Environment Agency renewed its rules in April.

The successful bidder will operate a flower shop at the Bukit Merah View Market and Hawker Centre.

And existing stall holders aren't seeing red over this low rental, instead, they are happy to have more stall holders in the market.

Bukit Merah View Merchants and Hawkers Committee's member Peh Cheng Hoe said: "It's fair competition. We welcome more hawkers because right now (as) the products sold here aren't wide-ranging.

"So, whether the rental is S$10 or S$50 per month, we would welcome them -- especially if they can help bring in more customers."

Alexandra View residential site receives 6 bids

Alexandra View residential site receives 6 bids

SINGAPORE: The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) received 6 bids at the close of tender for a land parcel at Alexandra View on Tuesday.

The 99-year leasehold residential site was launched for public tender on November 7.

The top bid was submitted by Singland Homes, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SGX-listed property developer Singapore Land.

Singland Homes' bid of S$970 per square foot per plot ratio (psf ppr) was 10.9 percent higher than the second highest bidders, Far East Orchard and FCL Topaz.

This works out to S$332.68 million for a total site area of about 6,501 square metres.

Nicholas Mak, executive director at SLP International Property Consultants said Singland's top bid was probably determined after benchmarking its offer above the previous tender price of S$960 psf ppr for the Prince Charles Crescent site in September 2012.

Lee Sze Teck, Senior Manager at Dennis Wee Group (DWG) considers the winning bid "a good price" given the site's proximity to Redhill MRT station.

Property analysts are estimating the breakeven price to fall between S$1,400 and S$1,450 psf.

This means the site can be launched above S$1,550 psf, which according to Mr Mak, will set a new record launch price for the area.

Mr Mak added that the results of Tuesday's tender could also lead the government to offer one to two more development sites in the Redhill area in the upcoming government land sales programme.

SIA sells Virgin Atlantic stake to Delta Air Lines

SIA sells Virgin Atlantic stake to Delta Air Lines

SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines has confirmed it is selling its 49% stake in Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic to Delta Air Lines for US$360 million (S$439 million) in cash.

The deal requires regulatory approval and is expected to close by the end of next year.

SIA acquired the stake in Virgin Atlantic more than 12 years ago.

In a filing with the Singapore Exchange on Tuesday, the carrier said it had been evaluating strategic options for its stake for some time, as the investment has not performed to expectations.

It added that commercial arrangements with Virgin Atlantic, including codesharing and frequent-flyer programme ties, are expected to remain in place after the divestment.

Separately, Delta Air Lines said it will form a joint venture with Virgin Atlantic.

Under the accord, Virgin and Delta will share costs and revenues on routes between New York and London.

Virgin Group and Richard Branson will retain a controlling stake in Virgin Atlantic.

The deal will enable Delta to expand at London's Heathrow airport, a lucrative hub for corporate passengers where landing slots are generally hard to acquire.
