SINGAPORE: Residents at an HDB block in Yishun Avenue 11 reported that their tap water has been giving off a foul smell.

Water agency PUB said tests on water samples from the block show the water is safe for drinking.

It has since given the block's three water tanks a thorough cleaning.

Residents said the problem started on February 14.

One resident who stayed at the ninth floor said she developed rashes.

"On Friday, I found rashes on my body, and it got worse on Sunday. It was very itchy. On Monday, I went to see a doctor," said Lin Hui Min.

MAS reportedly in discussions to discontinue SIBOR

MAS reportedly in discussions to discontinue SIBOR
Posted: 18 February 2013 2246 hrs

SINGAPORE: Reports say Singapore's central bank is in discussions to discontinue the Singapore Interbank Offered Rate (SIBOR).

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) launched a review of the SIBOR last July after abuses related to the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) surfaced.

A few months later, it broadened investigations to include some exchange rates set in the city.

Analysts say getting rid of SIBOR would force banks in Singapore to renegotiate outstanding loans, which could potentially hit earnings.

SIBOR is used as a basis for the pricing of all loans in Singapore, ranging from business loans to mortgages.

Guillemard camp set for redevelopment

Guillemard camp set for redevelopment
By Lip Kwok Wai | Posted: 18 February 2013 2007 hrs

SINGAPORE: Guillemard camp is set for redevelopment, after sitting vacant for almost ten years.

The camp has remained empty ever since the military moved out in 2003.

Currently, ownership of the land is split between the Ministry of Defence and the Singapore Land Authority.

There have been plans by URA - under its Master Plan 2008 - to redevelop the 10-hectare site for housing, but a fixed date hasn't been set.

To construct the MRT Circle Line, part of the Old Airport Road has already been closed, and cars have been passing through Guillemard Camp as a detour.

Analysts said it's time to convert the land - which is in a prime location - especially in light of Singapore's land shortage.

Director of Koh International, Chris Koh said: "I must say it's a good site, centrally located, not far from the city via Nicoll Highway, and also near to the Geylang, Kallang area.

"We should use it especially now, when housing is an issue where we feel there is insufficient supply to meet the demand. Some people might ask, 'should SAF camps be located in such prime locations?'. That will put pressure on SAF to move to the outskirts."

Marina One set to raise bar for future integrated developments

Marina One set to raise bar for future integrated developments
By Saifulbahri Ismail | Posted: 19 February 2013 1515 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Marina One mixed-use development in the heart of Singapore's Central Business District (CBD) will be a coveted business and lifestyle destination that will raise the bar for integrated developments and act as a catalyst to attract and grow new businesses.

That is the vision of M+S, a joint venture company owned by Malaysia's Khazanah Holdings Bhd and Singapore's Temasek Holdings, that is working on the landmark project.

M+S also said Marina One, designed by world renowned architect Christoph Ingenhoven, marks a brand new chapter in the Marina Bay Masterplan.

Its design was unveiled on Tuesday by Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his Malaysian counterpart, Mr Najib Razak, who are holding their Leaders' Retreat.

M+S said Marina One will be completed in 2017, with a gross floor area of 3.67 million square feet and is valued at S$7 billion.

It consists of Marina One Residences, Marina One Offices as well as a retail podium.

Marina One Residences comprises two towers of 1,042 luxury city residences, ranging from one- to four- bedroom units, including penthouses. These will be launched in the second half of the year.

Marina One Offices -- with east and west towers -- offer 1.88 million square feet of prime office space.

Its crown jewels will be two 100,000 square feet office floor plates, one of the largest in Asia.

Marina One will also have a retail podium called The Heart, which will also serve as a sanctuary and green space.

The development will also incorporate a unique garden ecosystem by landscape architect Gustafson Porter, best known for their world-class design of Singapore's Bay East, Gardens by the Bay.

PM Lee said he is happy to see the bricks and mortar starting to come up on site.

He added: "It's going to be an iconic project in the middle of our new business district for many, many more years to come. This is a project that both countries will be proud of and which will thrive and prosper in our city and friendship."

Mr Najib said he is excited to see the design for himself.

"I think it's a wonderful design. I think we have a real winner in this Marina One and it will certainly fulfil our expectations... A landmark, an iconic building and what we see today is the beginning of that iconic building," he added.

The two leaders were also briefed on the progress of the other joint project located near Kampong Glam.

The project, called DUO, includes office, residential and hotel components.

It sits on 160,000 square metres of land and is valued at S$4 billion.

The DUO and Marina One are part of six land parcels jointly developed by Singapore and Malaysia under a land swop deal agreed on in 2010.

New express bus service from Yishun to CBD launched

New express bus service from Yishun to CBD launched
Posted: 18 February 2013 1720 hrs

SINGAPORE: Yishun residents may now be able to get to and from work with less hassle, thanks to a new express bus service launched on Monday.

Service 850E connects Yishun to the Central Business District by using the Seletar and Central Expressways.

It operates two trips - at 7:30am and 7:45am - from Yishun Avenue 11 to Shenton Way, and two other trips in the evening from Anson Road back to Yishun Avenue 11 - at 6:15pm and 6:30pm.

Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs and Nee Soon GRC MP, K Shanmugam said the service started based on feedback from residents.

He said: "It's a direct service straight into town. The residents we spoke with were very happy about it. But the way I see it, my fellow MPs see it, it is but a small step and there are a lot more things that we need to do."

Mr Shanmugam also added that the transport issues in the Nee Soon constituency are similar to those in other places.

"The MRT trains are crowded during peak periods, the feeder buses, we need to have more of them, and in terms of also the services, we need to try and enhance them. So as I said, everything helps, but this is not a panacea, this is one small step. We have a lot more to do," he said.
