SINGAPORE: The electricity tariffs for the third quarter of 2016 will increase by an average of 9.2 per cent, or 1.59 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), compared to the previous quarter.
In a press release on Thursday (Jun 30), SP Services said that this was largely due to the cost of natural gas for electricity generation, which rose by 26 per cent compared to second quarter 2016. It was partly offset by lower non-fuel costs, notwithstanding an increase in Market Support Services fee to meet higher market system and development costs, it added.
Electricity tariff for households will increase from 17.68 to 19.27 cents per kWh for Jul 1 to Sep 30 this year, SP Services said. The average monthly bill for families living in 4-room flats is expected to increase by S$6.79.
SP Services reviews the electricity tariffs quarterly based on guidelines set by the Energy Market Authority (EMA). The new tariffs have been approved by the EMA.

Electricity tariffs to fall by 0.2% in Q3, 2014
The fall translates to a S$0.20 decrease in the average monthly electricity bill for families living in four-room HDB flats, SP Services says.
SINGAPORE: Electricity tariffs will drop by an average of 0.05 cent per kWh or 0.2 per cent for the period July 1 to Sept 30, Singapore Power subsidiary SP Services said on Monday (June 30).
For households, the electricity tariff will decrease from 25.73 to 25.68 cents per kWh. This translates to a S$0.20 decrease in the average monthly electricity bill for families living in four-room Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats, SP Services said.
SP Services reviews electricity tariffs quarterly based on guidelines set by the Energy Market Authority (EMA). The latest tariffs have been approved by the EMA.

Electricity tariffs are regulated by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and revised quarterly to reflect the actual cost of electricity. SP Services buys electricity on behalf of customers and pays the gencos, transmission licensee and other market players based on the rates of the various cost components as approved by EMA. The average electricity consumption in June has increased as compared to May, but Singapore Power said there is no evidence that it was due to the haze.
SINGAPORE: The average electricity consumption in June has increased as compared to May, but Singapore Power said there is no evidence that it was due to the haze.
According to Singapore Power, the average electricity consumption of domestic customers in June 2013 was 520.23 kWh, compared to May, which was 509.57 kWh.
Based on statistics over the past four years, consumption in June tends to be higher. This is likely due to the hot weather during the month.
Electronic stores MediaCorp spoke with said they received about 30 per cent to 50 per cent more requests for aircon installations in June.
Aircon servicing companies also saw an increase in requests last month.
According to Gain City, it saw double the requests for aircon servicing, while Absolute Solutions saw 40 per cent more servicing requests.
Stan Toh, operations manager at Absolute Solutions, said: "We would actually recommend our customers to do a three-month normal servicing. And at the same time, we also recommend them to keep their temperatures at 25 degrees Celsius. They should also be using an inverter unit. If they do all the above, they can actually look at up to S$350 savings in their electricity bill per year."

Households, businesses to benefit from energy plans

SINGAPORE: Households and businesses will stand to benefit from more advanced energy management systems and dynamic pricing plans that will help reduce their energy costs.
The government will increase competition in the electricity retail market, by lowering the contestability threshold for Commercial and Industrial (C&I) consumers.
The threshold will go down from the current 10MWh to 4MWh by October next year.
Minister in Prime Minister's Office S Iswaran said in Parliament when fully implemented, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across all sectors will benefit.
He said town councils will also be a key beneficiary as all of them would be able to negotiate for retail packages at competitive market prices.
He assured the needy will continue to receive assistance.
Mr Iswaran said: "Notwithstanding these efforts, we recognise that energy costs may still be a cause for concern for some households. Our policy is to allow the price of our energy to reflect its true cost and not to subsidise energy consumption, which would be wasteful and unsustainable.
"Instead, we provide targeted assistance to low- and middle-income households through the permanent Utility-Save (U-Save) rebates which were announced in last year's Budget. This year's Budget has doubled the U-Save rebates across all categories of HDB households, via an additional one-off GST Voucher-U-Save special payment."

Household electricity tariff to go up from July 1

SINGAPORE: After two quarters of downward adjustments, household electricity tariff will go up by 6.93 per cent or 1.25 cents per kilo watt hour (kWh) from July 1 to September 30.
Electricity supplier SP Services said the increase is due largely to higher average fuel oil prices from April to June, which hit S$76.24 per barrel.
This is a 26 per cent increase from the S$60.47 per barrel used in setting the previous quarter's tariff.
The tariff is calculated based on a new formula which kicks in next month.
Under the revised formula, the electricity tariff for the next quarter will be based on the average fuel oil prices in the preceding three months instead of the fuel oil price in the first month of the previous quarter.
SP Services said the tariff revision is mitigated by a reduction in the cost recovery fee which it collects to cover the costs of billing and meter reading.
The fee which forms part of the overall tariff will go down from 0.28 cent per kWh to 0.22 cent. SP Services said this reduction is due to its productivity improvements and cost reductions.

SINGAPORE: The revised electricity tariff formula for households will kick in from July after the Energy Market Authority's (EMA) consultation with key stakeholders in the energy industry and members of the public.
The new approach will calculate the electricity tariff for the third quarter of 2009, from July to September 2009, based on the average of fuel oil prices in the preceding three months – from April to the middle of June 2009.
Currently, the EMA uses only the fuel oil price in the first month of the previous quarter to set tariffs for the current quarter.
SP Services, which supplies electricity to all households, will calculate the new tariff and seek EMA's approval before announcing it by end-June.
EMA said the revised formula will allow the electricity tariff to be more reflective of the prevailing market price of fuel, since more recent fuel price data will be used in computing the tariff.
The averaging of fuel oil prices over the three months will also help to smoothen out any large swings in the fuel oil market within this period.
EMA also pointed out that while the revised formula is an improvement over the existing one, it does not necessarily result in a lower tariff all the time.
