Puzzle-maker Unveils World's Largest Rubik's Cube
By David Murphy
We're talking, of course, about the world's largest Rubik's Cube—that's an unofficial title as of right now, but it's difficult to envision one that's larger than Deventer's. Measuring in at 17-by-17-by-17 tiles, or nearly half-a-foot across, the cube took Deventer more than 60 hours of manufacturing (as well as three separate prototypes) to construct. Just dying the 1,539 pieces that make up his cube, entitled "Over the Top," took the puzzle-maker ten hours.
We won't even ask as to how much time it might take an enthusiast to solve the thing—perhaps as much time as it might take one to save up to purchase the puzzle, which ranges from around $1,800 to $2,000 over at Shapeways. However, since the company does custom-print the puzzles itself on a 3D printer, one can at least personalize the look and material of "Over the Top."
Deventer plans to officially unveil his creation at the New York Puzzle Party Symposium on February 12. He'll also craft up a YouTube video of the event, though no speed runs through the monstrous cube are likely to be a part of the footage.
Researchers—including a Google engineer—released the results of their search for "God's Number" last year, or the informal name given to the highest amount of moves it could theoretically take one to solve a Rubik's cube from any possible starting permutation. The number has been slowly trickling down from 52 since 1981, and it now rests at 20 maximum moves.
We mention the Google engineer bit, as the research team harnessed the power of Google's data farms—specifically, 35 CPU years' worth of processing power—to calculate out the solution to every potential Rubik's Cube position, 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 in all. This number was broken down into a mere 55,882,296 sets of positioning problems by using symmetry and other qualifiers to reduce the number of actual computations needed.
Deventer has yet to release the details of how many potential moves could make up a 17-by-17-by-17 cube.

Marriage Is Good for Physical and Mental Health, Study Finds
Marriage Is Good for Physical and Mental Health, Study Finds
ScienceDaily (Jan. 28, 2011) — The 'smug marrieds' may have good reason to feel pleased with themselves as experts now confirm that long-term committed relationships are good for mental and physical health and this benefit increases over time.
In an editorial published by student BMJ, David and John Gallacher from Cardiff University say that on average married people live longer. They say that women in committed relationships have better mental health, while men in committed relationships have better physical health, and they conclude that "on balance it probably is worth making the effort."
Men's physical health probably improves because of their partner's positive influence on their lifestyle and "the mental bonus for women may be due to a greater emphasis on the importance of the relationship," they write.
But the journey of true love does not always run smoothly, maintain the authors, pointing to evidence that relationships in adolescence are associated with increased adolescent depressive symptoms.
And not all relationships are good for you, they add, referring to evidence that single people have better mental health than those in strained relationships.
They also confirm that breaking up is hard to do, saying "exiting a relationship is distressing" and divorce can have a devastating impact on individuals. Having numerous partners is also linked with a risk of earlier death.
They conclude that while relationship failures can harm health this is not a reason to avoid them. A good relationship will improve both physical and mental health and perhaps the thing to do is to try to avoid a bad relationship rather than not getting into a relationship at all.

Tampines Court to try for en bloc sale again
Tampines Court to try for en bloc sale again
By Lynda Hong | Posted: 29 January 2011 2245 hrs
SINGAPORE: Tampines Court owners are attempting an en bloc sale for the second time.
MediaCorp understands that 47 percent of the owners met on Saturday for its first Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM).
A 12-member sales committee was also formed.
The next step is for the second EOGM to decide on the marketing agents and lawyers to handle the sale, before deciding on the valuation of the estate
which spans 702,162 sq ft with 560 units.
The former HUDC estate, which is about 26 years old, was put up for a collective sale for S$405 million in 2006.
The two-year process, however, failed as its sales committee could not meet deadlines to complete the deal by 25 July, 2008.

Sungei Whampoa gets makeover
By Shaffiq Alkhatib | Posted: 30 January 2011 1602 hrs
SINGAPORE: Residents living near Sungei Whampoa can now enjoy new riverside facilities such as lookout decks and a landscaped garden.
This is the result of a S$2.2 million facelift that's part of the Active, Beautiful and Clean or ABC Waters Programme which kicked off in 2006.
The project, which included the greening of canal walls along a 250-metre stretch of Sungei Whampoa from the Central Expressway to the St George's Lane HDB estate, was completed in 16 months.
The nationwide PUB initiative aims to transform places such as canals and reservoirs into community spaces.
Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim said 13 of such projects have already been completed around the island.
They include the Kolam Ayer ABC Waterfront, Pandan Reservoir and Jurong Lake.

Vertical farming boosts production of vegetables
Vertical farming boosts production of vegetables
By Jason Tan | Posted: 28 January 2011 2016 hrs
SINGAPORE : Singapore has successfully developed a vertical farming system prototype, which could help the land-scarce Republic maximise its production of leafy vegetables.
Vertical farming is a technique of producing agricultural products at multiple levels, conserving land space in the process.
A six-metre tall structure rotates at one millimetre per second, distributing sunlight to all the plants.
Water powers the system and is constantly being recycled, keeping energy consumption low.
The system is also affordable too. One of the frames costs about S$10,000.
The prototype was developed by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority and private firm DJ Engineering.
During his visit to the farm, Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan said he is impressed with the system.
Mr Mah said: "It can produce about five times the output of a normal farm, using the same area - per square metre of space, it's actually able to produce five times (more). So it's very suitable for Singapore's condition.
"So far, very encouraging. And hopefully, this will then be expanded and help us to achieve our target - we're trying to achieve 10 per cent local production of leafy vegetables."
Mr Mah and other visitors also had a chance to sample some of the vegetables.
Owner of DJ Engineering, Jack Ng, has set up the company Sky Greens to drive the commercialisation of vertical farming.
Sky Greens expects the first crop of produce from the system to be available in major supermarkets by this year.

Soap Films Help to Solve Mathematical Problems
Soap Films Help to Solve Mathematical Problems
ScienceDaily (Jan. 25, 2011) — Soap bubbles and films have always fascinated children and adults, but they can also serve to solve complex mathematical calculations. This is shown by a study carried out by two professors at the University of Málaga, who have succeeded in solving classic problems using just such an innovative procedure.
"With the aid of soap films we have solved variational mathematical problems, which appear in the formulation of many physical problems," explains Carlos Criado, professor at the University of Málaga. Together with his colleague Nieves Álamo, he has just published his work in the American Journal of Physics.
Soap films always adopt the shape which minimises their elastic energy, and therefore their area, so that they turn out to be ideal in the calculus of variations, "where we look for a function that minimises a certain quantity (depending on the function)," adds the researcher.
"Of course there are other ways to solve variational problems, but it turns out to be surprising, fun and educative to obtain soap films in the shape of brachistochrones, catenaries and semicircles," Criado emphasises.
The professor offers the example of the famous problem of the brachistochrone curve. What shape must a wire be in order that a ball travels down it from one end to the other (at a different height) as rapidly as possible? The answer is the brachistochrone (from the Greek brachistos, the shortest, and cronos, time), the curve of fastest descent.
New methods for old problems
The mathematician Johann Bernoulli found the answer centuries ago when he realised that it was a cycloid (the curve described by a point on a circle rolling along a line). That was the origin of the calculus of variations, which was also used in other classic problems, like that of the catenary (the shape of a chain suspended by its endpoints) and the isoperimetric curve (a curve which maximises the area it encloses).
The study shows that these calculations may be related to Plateau's problem, that is, to find the shape adopted by a soap film under certain boundary restrictions. Besides, the researchers show how to design the experiments, constraining the soap films between two surfaces in such a way as to obtain the appropriate curves.
Other Spanish researchers, like Isabel Fernández, of the University of Seville, and Pablo Mira, of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, have succeeded in finding for the first time the solution to specific mathematical problems (the Bernstein problem in the Heisenberg space) with the help of soap films.

More deaths on roads last year
More deaths on roads last year
By Saifulbahri Ismail | Posted: 27 January 2011 1740 hrs
SINGAPORE : The Traffic Police said there were more deaths on the roads last year, with fatal accidents totalling 190 in 2010, up 10 per cent from 2009.
In its annual road and traffic report released on Thursday, the Traffic Police said motorcyclists and pillion riders continue to be the most vulnerable group of road users.
They accounted for about 45 per cent of all fatalities last year.
There was also an increase in deaths among elderly pedestrians. Among the 55 pedestrians who died on the roads last year, about half were aged 60 and above.
But overall, the fatal and injury accident rate last year saw an improvement over 2009.
It was 91.93 out of a 10,000 vehicle population - the second lowest in the past five years, the Traffic Police said.
Commenting on the road traffic statistics released by the Traffic Police on Thursday, the Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC) has urged all users to be careful and patient when using the roads.
SRSC chairman Bernard Tay said all users have a role to play in making Singapore's roads safe.
As motorcyclists, pillion riders and elderly pedestrians continue to be the most vulnerable groups of road users, the council feels that concerted efforts are needed to help keep them safe.
Mr Tay said the council will continue to do its part in educating road users to make road safety an integral part of their life.
It will also continue to work closely with the authorities and relevant agencies and partners to make the roads safer for all users.

Lotus Notes/Domino 8.5.2 Fix Pack 1 Release Notice
Notes/Domino Fix List
Lotus Notes/Domino 8.5.2 Fix Pack 1 Release Notice
December 17, 2010
June 27, 2011: New SPR descriptions in bold below.
Lotus announces the release of Notes/Domino 8.5.2 Fix Pack 1, a scheduled Fix Pack of low-risk, high-impact fixes to help customers safely avoid known issues. IBM strongly recommends that customers running Notes/Domino 8.5.2 upgrade to this latest Fix Pack since it addresses a small percentage of defects that impact the broadest set of customers. Fix Packs are released periodically between Maintenance Releases to provide a greater level of stability for customer environments. They go through the same level of fix, regression and interoperability testing that occurs with Maintenance Releases. Fix Packs are always cumulative and contain all of the fixes from previous ones.
Notes/Domino 8.5.2 Fix Pack 1 addresses defects in both the Client and Server. All Fix Packs are language independent and may be applied on any language version of Notes/Domino 8.5.2. (Note: Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packs for Notes 8.5.2 and above no longer need to be installed before fixes. See technote #1404436 for more details.)
IBM strongly recommends upgrading to the latest Fix Pack, since Fix Packs address a small percentage of defects that impact the broadest set of customers. This is a scheduled Fix Pack of a limited number of low-risk/high-impact fixes to help customers safely avoid known problems. Fix Packs are released periodically between Maintenance Releases to provide a greater level of stability for customer environments. 8.5.2 FP1 may be applied to any language version of Domino 8.5.2.
Download options
See Technote #4028680 - Download options for Notes/Domino 8.5.2 Fix Packs. Fix Packs will not be distributed on physical media (DVD/CD).
• If you have Notes 8.5.2 Basic Configuration or Notes/Admin/Designer (Basic edition) 8.5.2 installed, use the Notes 8.5.2 Fix Pack 1 Basic install.
• If you have Notes 8.5.2 Standard Configuration or Notes/Admin/Designer (Standard edition) 8.5.2 installed, use the Notes 8.5.2 Fix Pack 1 Standard install.
Decision to upgrade
Customers unable to upgrade to later Releases should install Fix Packs to benefit from later fixes made to the product. By providing a small number of fixes, customers are able to accept fewer code changes with lower risk, allowing them to "patch" an older Maintenance Release until a more extensive upgrade to the current Release is possible.
However, while Fix Packs provide important fixes and IBM strongly recommends applying the latest Fix Pack available for a Maintenance Release, IBM still recommends that customers upgrade to the latest Release + Fix Pack combination to receive the broadest set of fixes available. You will receive more overall fixes with a later Release + Fix Pack than with a set of Fix Packs on top of an earlier Maintenance Release. For more information, see technote #1368141 - "Differences between Notes/Domino Maintenance Releases, Fix Packs and Cumulative Client Hotfixes."
Fixes contained in this Fix Pack
Note: A plus symbol (+) before the SPR number indicates a fix for a regression bug. A regression bug is an issue that was introduced in a Maintenance Release but did not exist in previous releases of that code stream. For example, a bug that appears in 8.5.2 but did not exist in 8.5.1 is a regression.
Notes: If an APAR # exists for the corresponding SPR #, it will appear in parentheses next to the SPR # (LO12345)
The Fix List database on developerWorks contains the description of each fix in this Fix Pack, and indicates which platform(s) have been fixed.
8.5.2 FP1 Final Fix List
Client
These fixes apply to the Basic Client only:
SPR# CJSN87SQD2 - Fixed an intermittent client crash during Sametime login.
SPR# BJGY7XXMTG - Fixed a crash which occurred when using an R6 mail template and clicking on multiple mail messages in the preview pane in the 8.5.1 client. A workaround to this problem is to upgrade the mail template to version 8.x.
These fixes apply to the Standard Notes Client:
SPR# ADET87ZRQX - Daylight savings time change for Egypt. On August 10, 2010, Egypt will be ending DST for the month of Ramadan. Fixed a problem where the calendar entries were off by an hour between September 9th and September 30th.
SPR# AEDS8ACV9C - Fixed a problem where policy updates that occur before the client is completely logged in are not propagated in a timely manner.
SPR# BWLU7YJBTW - Changed the title on the Macintosh Hotfix installer page to "Lotus Notes 8.5.1 Hotfix" and the title of the Macintosh Fix Pack installer page to read "Lotus Notes 8.5.1 Fix Pack".
SPR# CREH89B2VB - Some Sametime users experienced intermittent login failures when using SPNEGO authentication. The LTPA token was being removed from the account used to authenticate with the SPNEGO authentication server. This fix corrects the error so that SPNEGO authentication works reliably.
SPR# CSMH899S2L - Enabling a feature may fail to configure because one or more if its features are uninstalled or upgraded by another process, causing the main feature to become orphaned. When this happens, the main feature will be removed from the manifest and the config operation will not fail but a warning added to the log.
SPR# DWHD89SSAJ - Editing a local activity displays an error message.
SPR# DWHD89SSE4 - Unable to add members error when editing an activity
SPR# GMAA87KJ42 - Fixed a problem where users were unable to access RSS feeds until they have authenticated with the proxy either by opening an internet session or opening an email that has HTML images.
SPR# IFAY88DH6Q - Prior to this fix, RSS feeds in Notes were not getting updates (deletions or additions to the feed).
SPR# JADS83UG8V - Prior to this fix, a user was prompted with the login dialog in case their password was null.
SPR# JCHC8ADBN8 - Error "Unexpected results have occurred during the provisioning operation." when installing XPD on the Mac platform.
SPR# JMEA82KPUM - The following error was displayed during install of Notes. Error "Notes hotfix did not install. Error encountered while installing Notes Core Hotfix component".
SPR# MALK854G7J - Fixed an unexpected crash issue because of a null pointer reference.
SPR# MKRT88TP4U - Several accessibility navigation issues related to Notes help were fixed.
SPR# MPAA7RD9C2 - Prior to this fix, the selections were not cleared whenever a Drag and Drop was performed on documents to be archived.
SPR# MWER88NFWT - Prior to this fix, Notes Feedreader authenticated itself as "MSIE 7.0".
SPR# PCHE89APJV - Fixed a problem where the view pane shrunk after multiple opens. This regression was introduced in 8.5.2.
SPR# QFHO8A59ZL - Prior to this fix, the rcplauncher failed to launch if there were quotes in the path variable on windows.
SPR# QFHO84GJ47 - Installing 851, 851 FP4, Symphony 3.0 Add-on causes Notes not to launch. The issue is that Sym 3.0 includes base features. Some of these base features are patched. When the new base feature is installed, it orphans the feature patches. When Notes is launched it tries to configure the feature patches and the launch fails because the feature that the patch is intended for is no longer available.
SPR# QFHO89B9A8 - Fixed a problem after installing Symphony 1.3 and the ODFPatch where Symphony will keep re-launching.
SPR# QFHO89L52E - Provisioning "cleanup" action failed when upgrading Symphony on Windows and Mac.
SPR# SSZG7AC6BK - After previewing a mail, insert key won't toggle read/unread status.
SPR# XCDL89Q858 - @Domain not added to username for Copy into New Message.
SPR# YYSN89945B - With this fix, an extra routine will no longer be run when failing to upgrade Notes on Ubuntu. Customers should exit Notes prior to upgrading on the Linux platform.
SPR# TMDS8B5TPB - Fix resolves an issue within the Client, which failed to launch 1st time after an upgrade.
SPR# HJHJ8AN42Q - Fix resolves an install issue, where error is reported even if add-on installer passes successfully.
SPR# MCKD89CFJR - Fixed a XPD runtime issue "Error working with web service: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Premature end of file." caused by the com.ibm.rcp.net.http bundle which overrides the platform's java.net.URLConnection implementation.

SPR# NORK88VQ6P - Prior to this fix, the mime parser caused the smtp server to hang when processing some incomplete mime messages.
SPR# PHAN89ZB5T - If a network read error occurs during an http post, the initialization of internal java objects does not complete and a java thread local is not set/reset correctly. This causes all subsequent xpage requests that are processed by that thread to fail and return an http error 500 to the client. Code was added to detect this case and reset the thread local so that subsequent xpages requests do not fail. This regression was introduced in 8.5.2.
SPR# PHAN88HEKA - Fixed loss of embedded images in rich text fields when server persistence is set to keep pages on disk.

SPR# TACN87YPXP - On IBM i 7.1, if more than 1 Domino PTF is installed, the NSD only lists the first one correctly.
SPR# TPON7XGH46 - Prior to this fix, Domino rewrote the Sensitivity Header in SMTP mails. The sensitivity header is mapped to the item value, $KeepPrivate="1". This header has any of these values -- Personal, Private, or Company-Confidential.
Changes have been made to give customers control over the mapping of the Sensitivity header to the $KeepPrivate item. The changes introduce three new ini settings:
SMTP_NO_MAP_PERSONAL - if set to 1, do not map 'Sensitivity: Personal' header to $KeepPrivate="1"
SMTP_NO_MAP_PRIVATE - if set to 1, do not map 'Sensitivity: Private' header to $KeepPrivate="1"
SMTP_NO_MAP_COMPCONF- if set to 1, do not map 'Sensitivity: Company-Confidential' header to $KeepPrivate="1"
The default value for these settings is 0, so that if all are 0, then, as before, a Sensitivity header with a Personal, Private, or Company-Confidential body will be mapped to the notes $KeepPrivate item with a value of "1". Personal and Private have been mapped to $KeepPrivate="1" for a long time, while the mapping of Company-Confidential to $KeepPrivate="1" is relatively recent. Wiith the introduction of the new ini settings, customers can choose which, if any, of the settings are mapped to $KeepPrivate="1".
SPR# TSOE887PYX - In Domino 8.5, changes were made to the way notes were allocated in an NSF that forced allocations to the end of the database. That has a negative effect on inplace compaction of databases that are on a live server. This regression was introduced in 8.5.
SPR# TSOE88PQNU - Detect and repair specific problems with profile document's $LastReplicaIDs item corruption.
SPR# TSOE88VMVP - Fixed a problem in writing out the super block in a partially complete state due to contention during an error condition.

SPR# JFBM85TTZY - With this fix, the size of the attendee fields on a iCalendar invite will be limited so the maximum size of summary items will not be exceeded. These fields are set to 32K in default. This limit can be configured more specifically via the $IcalSMTP2NtsAddrLstSzLmt ini parameter (such as $IcalSMTP2NtsAddrLstSzLmt=36 to allow lists to total 36K). These fields combined with all other summary fields cannot exceed 62K.
SPR# JPAI86SJ37 - This fix addresses issues erroring out of NIFOpenCollection calling NIFCloseCollection causing a panic with invalid access to a collection structure.
SPR# JPAI896PRQ - Fixed an infinite loop in nserver.exe.
SPR# JPMS8A2MDM - This fix corrects a lock of the GUL semaphore which should be for ODS 51 only. This regression was introduced in 8.5.2.
SPR# JRED84BLGN - Fixed a problem where compaction would not effectively compact databases. This regression was introduced in 8.5.
SPR# KHAN86WTVS - Fixed a problem with inplace size calculation stats for databases greater than 4 GB.
SPR# KKOO66F4BW - Implemented the ability to enable automatic responses to the meeting invitations option with associated ICON note info.
SPR# LMIL88Q62X - Defensive fix for SMTP CPU Spike on malformed delivery failures. This will fix an overall system slowdown due to consuming the CPU. This regression was introduced in 8.5.2.
SPR# MDIY89XMSR - Prior to this fix, OSFileCopy was not copying all data for files greater than 4GB.
SPR# MJBG86AS2Z - This fix prevents a crash in NSFDbModifiedTime4 which can occur under certain circumstances.
SPR# MSER7YYQVW - Fixed a PANIC: LookupHandle: handle not allocated.
SPR# MSER883QLZ - Fixed a server crash while running platform statistics.
SPR# SEGN85MKYN - Long non-ascii font names were not handled correctly during conversion causing the converter to exceed the size of the fonts table.
SPR# SRYI7YCADN - Fixed a Domino Server crash when refreshing the cache that stores information for Internet Site documents.
SPR# SWAS89GJC4 - Fixed corruption due to a bad log sequence number in a logged database. With this fix, the database will be flushed first instead of marking corrupt. If the flush fails to resolve the issue, then the database will be marked corrupt.
SPR# SWAS89WSF4 - Fixed a deadlock between GUL lock and DBUQSem.
Note: (Dated 24th Jan 2017) This IBM Lotus Notes / Domino Release Notice is added instead of the original article. Seemed someone out there is extremely unhappy that I linked and share an article.

Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Data Access Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2451910)
This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Data Access Components. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. |

Vulnerability in Windows Backup Manager Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2478935)
This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in Windows Backup Manager. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a legitimate Windows Backup Manager file that is located in the same network directory as a specially crafted library file. For an attack to be successful, a user must visit an untrusted remote file system location or WebDAV share and open the legitimate file from that location, which in turn could cause Windows Backup Manager to load the specially crafted library file. |

HDB launches BTO projects in Bukit Batok, Yishun
Posted: 25 January 2011 1117 hrs
SINGAPORE: HDB is launching three BTO projects on Tuesday - Golden Daisy in Bukit Batok, Orchid Spring @ Yishun and Vista Spring @ Yishun.
A total of 1,728 standard flats will be offered, comprising 180 studio apartments, 192 units of two-room, 252 units of three-room, 828 units of four-room and 276 units of five-room flats.
95 per cent of the flat supply, excluding Studio Apartments, will be set aside for First-Timer households.
The price of flats ranges from S$83,000(for a studio apartment) to S$353,000.
HDB said its new flats are priced with a generous subsidy below their market value.
It added that the market value, as determined by professional valuers, takes into account the prices of comparable resale flats in the area, adjusted for factors such as location, flat attributes, design, availability of flats for occupation and prevailing market conditions.
In addition, eligible first-timers buying two-room and bigger new flats and earning not more than S$5,000 per month can also apply for the Additional CPF Housing Grant of up to S$40,000. The AHG can be used to offset the initial down-payment.
Applications for the new flats can be submitted online from January 25to February 7.
HDB said in the first six months of 2011, flat buyers can look forward to about 11,000 new BTO flats.
The next BTO launch in February 2011 will offer about 1,600 flats in Bukit Panjang and Sengkang.

SINGAPORE: Holland Tower has been put up for en bloc by its marketing agent Jones Lang LaSalle.
Market watchers expect the site to fetch about S$1,300 to S$1,400 dollars per square foot.
This is comparable to nearby developments like Robin Court, Maison Royal and Serene House.
The 14-story single tower development is located on a 22,000 square feet site currently zoned for residential use.
Jones Lang said the new development can maintain the existing height and have a gross floor area of about 43,500 square feet.
It added that the freehold development located at 10 Holland Heights, is minutes from the Botanic Gardens and Orchard Road.
The marketing agent also said the future Holland Village MRT station will be located just one bus stop away.
Jones Lang is still positive on the market, despite the property cooling measures that were introduced recently.
The marketing agent said it believes that there is still a pool of genuine buyers and investors who are looking for their own stay or for long term investments.
The tender for Holland Tower closes on the February 23.

SINGAPORE: Data released on Monday by the Department of Statistics (DOS) showed that the consumer price index (CPI) rose by 4.6 per cent on-year.
Higher costs in transport, housing and food led to the price hike.
DOS said that excluding housing, the consumer price index went up by a lower 4.3 per cent.
Meanwhile, compared to the previous month, CPI in December rose by 0.2 per cent due to higher costs of transport, food and recreation.
DOS said the increase more than offset the decline in housing cost.
It added that excluding housing, the consumer price index was 0.5 per cent higher.
And for the full year of 2010, the consumer price index rose by 2.8 per cent compared with 2009.
Excluding housing costs, the consumer price index for 2010 grew by 3.3 per cent.

S'pore slips to 3rd spot in global city rankings
S'pore slips to 3rd spot in global city rankings
By Travis Teo | Posted: 24 January 2011 1646 hrs
SINGAPORE : Singapore has slipped to third spot in the rankings for the most globalised city in the world last year.
The republic comes behind Hong Kong, which took the top spot, followed by Ireland, in the latest Ernst & Young Globalisation Index.
The index measures the world's 60 largest economies based on their degree of globalisation relative to their GDP.
Singapore took top spot in the index in 2009.
In its latest findings, the accounting firm found that the city state has lower scores for labour and technology compared to the year before.
Managing partner at Ernst & Young, Steven Phan, said: "The lower net migration, and reduction of trade in R&D as a proportion of GDP, has reduced Singapore's score."
But Singapore saw an improvement in score for cultural integration and has continued to perform strongly in terms of openness to trade and capital movements.
Looking ahead, Ernst & Young expects Singapore's globalisation score to steadily improve between this year and 2014.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong, which takes the top spot, saw improvements in all categories except technology, and is particularly strong in trade.
