New EC to be launched at Woodlands Ave 5
New EC to be launched at Woodlands Ave 5
Bellewoods is the first Executive Condominium to be launched after the Government introduced a sale restriction rule in January last year.
SINGAPORE: A new Executive Condominium (EC) along Woodlands Avenue 5 will be launched soon. Bellewoods is the first EC to be launched after the Government introduced a sale restriction rule in January last year.
Under the rule, developers of EC sites can only launch them for sale 15 months from the date of award of the sites or after the physical completion of foundation works, whichever is earlier. Potential home owners can apply for a unit at Bellewoods online starting Sep 27.
Construction of the new EC has already begun. It will be located near the upcoming Woodlands South MRT station along the Thomson-East Coast Line. Developers expect Woodlands to be a vibrant place as the Government has earmarked it as a regional centre.
The property market has cooled down after the authorities introduced measures to ensure home owners are more prudent with their purchase. However, the EC developer is confident there will still be a good demand for ECs. Mr Donald Ng, Senior Marketing Manager at Qingjian Realty said, "We will go through a slower process, because of all these financial regulations in place. There is a drop, but between an EC and a condo, there is still a difference.
“For condos - most of the prices are starting above S$1,000 per square foot (psf). And for ECs, it's hovering on average at about S$780 to S$800 psf, so for the EC buyers, there is still about a 20 per cent difference in terms of price per square foot."

SGX to introduce reduced board lot size from 19 January
SGX to introduce reduced board lot size from 19 January
Singapore Exchange (SGX) will reduce the standard board lot size of securities listed on SGX from 1,000 to 100 units from 19 January 2015. A smaller board lot size will make it more affordable for retail investors to invest in a wider range of equities, including blue chips, and enable them to build more balanced and diversified portfolios.
The reduction will apply to ordinary shares, including shares traded on GlobalQuote, real estate investment trusts, business trusts, company warrants, structured warrants and extended settlement contracts. Existing counters[1] with board lot sizes of 100 or less units will remain unchanged.
Magnus Bocker, CEO of SGX, said: “The reduced board lot size will benefit all investors and make it easier to invest in blue chips and index component stocks which tend to be higher-priced. It will also allow institutional investors to better manage their risk exposures through finer asset allocation of funds.”
David Gerald, President and CEO of Securities Investors Association (Singapore), said: “This is a much anticipated move that will be welcomed by our citizens. Now that blue chip stocks are more accessible in board lot size of 100 units, I would encourage retail investors to seriously consider share investing as a way to diversify their portfolio and grow their savings for retirement. SIAS hopes that citizens will invest with knowledge.”
The board lot sizes for exchange traded funds [2], American Depositary Receipts and fixed income instruments, including retail bonds, Singapore Government Securities and preference shares will remain unchanged.
Amendments will be made to the Listing Rules to cater for the reduction of the board lot size. Details are available at this link and include:
• Removal of Mainboard Listing Rules relating to board lot sizes for structured warrants; and
• Amendments to Mainboard and Catalist Listing Rules to require issuers to specify in the annual report, the number of shareholders who hold less than 100 shares.
More details on this initiative can be found at http://www.sgx.com/wps/portal/sgxweb/home/faqs#Reduction-of-Board-Lot-Size
-End-
[1] For securities with more than one board lot size, the counters with a current board lot size of 100 units or more will be consolidated into a single board lot size of 100 units. For example, Singtel is currently traded in board lots of 1,000, 100 and 10 units. After the reduction of board lot size, Singtel will only be traded in board lots of 100 and 10 units.
[2] Except for SPDR STI ETF and ABF SG Bond Fund for which the board lot size will be reduced to 100 units.

Care after cataract surgery
Care after cataract surgery
What to do after your cataract surgery
You are entitled to hospitalisation or medical leave after your cataract surgery, so try to take a rest.
You may read and watch TV. Gentle exercises are fine too. You can go out, but try to avoid crowded and dusty places. Wearing sunglasses when you are outdoors may help to keep your eyes comfortable and less sensitive to light.
You will be given eye drops for about a month to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. If you need to, ask a family member or friend to help instill the eye drops. If you were to go out, make sure you have access to hand hygiene facilities so that you can clean your hands before you instill your eye drops.
For mild pain, you may take paracetamol. If you have pain that is not relieved by this medicine, call your doctor.
When you sleep, please put on the eye shield given to you for at least 1 week so that you don’t press on the operated eye.
What NOT to do after your cataract surgery
For the first few days, your vision may be blurred, so be careful to avoid falling over or hurting your head or eye, especially if the operated eye is padded and the other eye also suffers from poor vision.
It is common to experience some eye irritation and discharge after surgery. However, for the first month, refrain from rubbing or touching your eye. Also avoid getting dust or soap water in your eye. Do not swim; do not use a hot tub, visit a sauna or spa. This is because there is a small wound in your eye, and you need to prevent it from getting contaminated.
No matter how small your wound is, try to avoid exerting yourself. Try not to bend over, carry heavy loads or perform strenuous exercises. Leave that 10km marathon to the next few months, and take a break from carrying the grandchildren for 2 to 3 weeks. Let your eye heal.
You may find that your pre-existing spectacles are not right anymore after the cataract operation. This is because the power of your operated eye has changed due to the surgery. Usually the power of the operated eye would stabilize at 1 month after the operation, at which time you can be measured for a new power for your glasses.
Refrain from driving or riding a motorcycle till you are confident that your vision is clear.
Medications and Diet
For the first few days, please clean the operated eye gently with the sterile saline wash and cotton balls given to you. You can continue to clean your eye with cool boiled water and clean cotton gauze thereafter.
Please use the eye drops and medications as the doctor prescribed, even when you feel that your eyes are fine. Do not instill anything else into your eye apart from the prescribed eye drops. Always wash your hands before your instill your eye drops.
Store your eye drops and medications as instructed. Do not keep them for longer than the instructed period as they may become contaminated.
Shake the eye drop bottle before use. Tilt your head back, look up and pull the lower eyelid down. Instill just ONE drop into the eye, avoiding contact with the eye lashes. Wait 5 minutes before instilling a different eye drop.
You can keep to your usual diet. There are no new dietary restrictions following your cataract surgery. Any pre-existing diets should be continued.
When do I see the doctor after surgery?
You will need to return for an eye examination the day after your surgery. Further appointments are usually called for at 1 week and 1 month after your operation. Keep all your appointments, even if you feel and see well.
When should I call my doctor?
Do not hesitate to contact us should you experience any of the following:
Pain that is not relieved by medication.
Deterioration of vision.
Excessive discharge from the operated eye.
Sudden onset of flashes or floaters.

No new posts?
There are no new posts coming up as I am quite busy these few weeks.
.....Yes, I know... the posts are getting stale and staler day by day. No new posts means less readers coming and this means less and lesser ads coming! This is not g00d. There are things that I wanted to blog and share but simply not enough time. I need more time!!!!
Can you spare me some time please?

China - Leftover men
Published on 6 Feb 2013
The growing number of older single men in China is NOT just an outcome of a gender imbalance caused by families favouring boys over girls in the one-child policy. Experts say it's also a reflection of a deeper social problem as a result of Chinese society's obsession with status and success. Channel NewsAsia's Valerie Tan has the report.

China women seeks financial security in marriages
Published on 19 Feb 2013
Financial security in marriage ranks high among women in China. That is according to the latest Chinese marriage report which shows that nearly 80 per cent of Chinese women look for partners who earn twice what they do. And more than half of them want full access to their future husbands' salary.

CHINA: China's "leftover men" pose potential social challenges
Published on 19 Oct 2013
It's predicted that by the year 2020, China will have 24 million men left on the shelf. It's great news for businesses like dating agencies, but the social challenges for the world's most populous country are tremendous. Channel NewsAsia's Valarie Tan got a first-hand look in Guangxi, the Chinese province currently with the most number of single men.

Singapore's CBD sees shifting mix of tenants: Jones Lang LaSalle
Singapore's CBD sees shifting mix of tenants: Jones Lang LaSalle
Tech companies such as Google and LinkedIn have been opening new offices or expanding existing ones in the city-state, Jones Lang LaSalle said in an article posted on its website.
SINGAPORE: Over the last three years, the global financial firms that dominated 60 per cent of office space in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD) have given up 500,000 square feet (sq ft) in space. Taking their places are big names from the e-commerce, consumer products and insurance industries, according to real estate group Jones Lang LaSalle.
“Ten years ago all anyone wanted was financial houses because they saw them as a growing industry that had the ability to pay,” Mr Chris Archibold, Head of Markets for Jones Lang LaSalle in Singapore, said. “Now any intelligent asset manager wants a bit more of a mix.”
IT: THE NEW OFFICE SPACE GRABBERS
Tech companies like Twitter, Booking.com and eBay have been opening new offices or expanding existing ones in Singapore, Jones Lang LaSalle said in an article posted on its website. PayPal has placed its international headquarters in the city, while Facebook is looking to double its space and LinkedIn is taking up the 50,000 sq ft of space vacated by Barclays.
Google has expanded six times and its Asia-Pacific headquarters now span four floors at Asia Square in Marina Bay. The building, which also houses re-insurers such as Swiss Re and SCOR, has 400 bicycle racks and showers so staff of the search engine operator can bike to work.
“You have this very bizarre dichotomy of Citibank bankers in their shiny shoes and guys in flip flops and shorts in the same elevator,” said Mr Hugh Andrew, the head of asset management for Asia Pacific at BlackRock. BlackRock owns the building via one of its funds.
LIFESTYLE A DRAW
Singapore’s pleasant lifestyle has made it a draw for companies looking to attract top talent, according to Jones Lang LaSalle. For instance, cosmetics company L’Oreal moved many of its Asian operations from Shanghai to Singapore, one motive being the need to retain senior staff who demand higher standards of living and better education for their children.
Other companies which have moved to Singapore include General Motors, which moved its Asian headquarters from Shanghai, taking over 30,000 sq ft of space from the Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The insurer Aon is also building its Asia-Pacific hub in Singapore and toy-maker Lego is in the Marina Bay Financial Centre.
“For modern companies with young employees, they will want to know answers to questions such as ‘will I be working in a sustainable environment?’” Mr Andrew said. “Twenty years ago, people were just wondering how big their office was going to be, and if it came with a parking space?”

Eyeing a dream job? Maintain your online professional profile
Eyeing a dream job? Maintain your online professional profile
About 46 per cent of Singaporeans say they maintain their CVs frequently but not so their professional social media profiles, according to Hays.
SINGAPORE: Almost 50 per cent of Singaporeans say they update their CVs often, but only 29 per cent say they keep their CVs and professional social media profiles up to date, said recruiting firm Hays.
In a statement on Tuesday (Aug 12), the company said that in its poll of 736 Singaporeans, 46 per cent indicated that they update their CVs most frequently. About 25 per cent only update their professional social media profile, while 29 per cent update both.
Comparing these results with job seekers around the region, Singaporeans who update both CVs and social media profiles are equal to those in Malaysia and slightly ahead of Hong Kong (25 per cent) and Japan (27 per cent). They are behind their Chinese counterparts (38 per cent), however, Hays said.
Commenting on the findings, Ms Christine Wright, Managing Director of Hays in Asia, said: "Job seekers need a dual approach in today's job search. They need to recognise the power and relevance of social media and put their best self out there by updating their online profiles as well their CVs regularly."
Hays also suggested the following for those looking to update their online profiles:
Audit Yourself: Take a subjective view of your current online profile by searching for your name. If you do not like what you see, change it.
Strengthen Your 'Brand': Use a professional looking head-and-shoulders profile picture, as it humanises you and is important since people are unlikely to connect with an anonymous profile.
Write A Compelling Bio: Make sure potential employers can learn from the bio what sets you apart.

Private home sales remain flat in July
Developers sold 484 new private homes last month, up marginally from the 482 units sold in June, according to the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
SINGAPORE: The private housing market remained in the doldrums in July, with sales of private homes remaining flat as developers continued to scale back new launches.
Property developers sold 484 new private homes last month, up marginally from the 482 units sold in June, latest data from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) showed on Friday (Aug 15). Including executive condominiums (ECs), 535 new units were sold in July, up from 531 units the previous month.
The lacklustre sales came as developers launched just 434 new units, slightly more than the 418 units launched in June. In May, 1,488 new private homes were sold as developers launched 1,819 units.

SINGAPORE - A grandmother died from a lack of oxygen to her brain after staff transferring her from one hospital to another did not turn on the oxygen tank after putting her on a ventilator.
Madam Ramasamy Krishnama became unresponsive in the three to four minutes that passed before the oxygen was turned on, a coroner's inquiry heard yesterday. No foul play is suspected.
The 83-year-old, who had been warded in June last year at Tan Tock Seng Hospital following a heart attack, was being transferred to Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital when the incident took place about a month later.
Madam Ramasamy, who had become dependent on mechanical ventilation, died a few hours after her condition deteriorated owing to "ventilatory failure" that cut off her oxygen supply.

Coroner's finding on elderly woman's death: Oxygen tank was not turned on
Coroner's finding on elderly woman's death: Oxygen tank was not turned on
Coroner's inquiry into death of 83-year-old woman during hospital transfer
Jul 31, 2014 6:00am
1: At 6.40pm, a three-person Mount E Novena transfer team prepares to transfer Madam Ramasamy Krishnama from TTSH to Mount E. The nurses prepare a portable ventilator and oxygen tank. They put the elderly patient on a gurney and place her on the paraPAC portable ventilator. The team hears a hissing sound, which they take to mean that the oxygen supply to the ventilator is switched on.TNP

By: RONALD LOH
It was a basic task - ensuring their patients had oxygen to breathe while she was being transferred from one hospital to another.
But when the medical team heard a hissing sound, they mistook it to mean that the ventilator was already switched on.
That mistake lead to the death of Madam Ramasamy Krishnama, 83, who suffered hypoxic brain injury, which occurs when insufficient oxygen gets to the brain, in July last year.
Yesterday, State Coroner Marvin Bay questioned whether there were sufficient safeguard procedures in place during the transfer, where the roles of the medical team are critical.
He also called for a review of protocols when transferring a patient from one hospital to another.
Madam Krishnama's son told The New Paper yesterday that his mother's death had been a shock to all of them.
"All we wanted was for her to come back (from the hospital) safe and sound," he added.
Parkway Shenton, which was handling the transfer and is part of the healthcare chain with Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and Gleneagles Hospital, said it is "deeply sorry for the family's loss" and is taking a very serious view of the incident and has since reviewed and revised its protocols that address the relevant issues.
