Cisco Wireless Residential Gateway Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Summary

A vulnerability in the web server used in multiple Cisco Wireless Residential Gateway products could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to exploit a buffer overflow and cause arbitrary code execution.

The vulnerability is due to incorrect input validation for HTTP requests. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP request to the affected device. Cisco has released free software updates that address this vulnerability. Workarounds that mitigate this vulnerability are not available.

Affected Products

Cisco has confirmed that only the products listed in the Vulnerable Products section running software based on BFC 5.5.2 or older are vulnerable. For those customers running software versions based on BFC 5.5.2 or older, they may obtain the software update by following the instructions listed under the "Obtaining Fixed Software" section. All BFC 5.5.3 based software and newer does not contain this vulnerability.

Details

A vulnerability in the web server used in multiple Cisco Wireless Residential Gateway products could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to exploit a buffer overflow and cause arbitrary code execution.

The vulnerability is due to incorrect input validation for HTTP requests. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP request to the affected device. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to crash the web server and execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. This vulnerability exists whether the device is configured in Router mode or Gateway mode.

Cisco has released software updates to its service provider customers that address the vulnerability described in this advisory. Prior to contacting Cisco TAC, customers are advised to contact their service providers to confirm the software deployed by the service provider includes the fix that addresses this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is documented in Cisco bug ID CSCup40808 (registered customers only) and has been assigned the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) ID CVE-2014-3306.

Cisco has scored the vulnerability in this advisory based on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS). The CVSS scoring in this security advisory is in accordance with CVSS version 2.0.

Impact

Successful exploitation of the vulnerability may cause the embedded web server to crash and allow the attacker to inject arbitrary commands and execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.

Software Versions and Fixes

When considering software upgrades, customers are advised to consult the Cisco Security Advisories, Responses, and Notices archive at http://www.cisco.com/go/psirt and review subsequent advisories to determine exposure and a complete upgrade solution.

In all cases, customers should ensure that the devices to be upgraded contain sufficient memory and confirm that current hardware and software configurations will continue to be supported properly by the new release. Workarounds

There are currently no known workarounds available for this vulnerability.

Obtaining Fixed Software

Cisco has released free software updates to its service provider customers that address the vulnerability described in this advisory. Prior to deploying software, customers are advised to consult their service providers or check the software for feature set compatibility and known issues that are specific to their environments.

Customers may only install and expect support for feature sets they have purchased. Customers with Service Contracts

Broken Windows, Broken Wireless

Someone came to me with an interesting problem:

The laptop has a problem with the wireless. Whenever anyone tries to connect to wireless, Windows 7 simply eeks out and produces Blue Screen of death (BSOD or simply the dread Blue Screen). Connecting to lan cable works. How to resolve that? And what is the problem?

Let us do this way:

On and off the wireless button. We can see that the laptop can detect the wifi signals - that is good.

Test that out: I'm using my phone as a hotspot and tries to connect to the laptop. Once it got my password or passphase, and before it even connects, the dread Blue Screen comes.

What does that info from Blue Screen says?
STOP 0x0000007F ( 0x0000... ....)

Googling provide some hints:
• Low-level hardware corruption, such as corrupt memory (RAM)
• Mismatched memory modules
• A malfunctioning motherboard

Other links point to problematic software programs.

Suspecting driver issue, but reinstalling the correct driver doesn't help. It crashes again with the same Blue Screen. So what is next? What options do we have?
Lets us zoom in....

So, is it a hardware or software problem?
Suddenly, I though of an idea. Why don't we test Linux out and there is no harm (and fun) testing ? Pump in Linux live cd and then connect to my hotspot. If it is able to detect and connect to my hotspot, then we know that there could be problem with Windows and the probably some corrupted software drivers. If it is a hardware issue, then connecting via Linux would likely fail as well. Then we can get the hardware replaced. That would simplify matters. Tested and able to get connected.

Format it and reinstall Windows 7 and start from scratch. Tested if is able to connect to wifi. It does! Cheers!

S'pore govt unveils plans to boost infocomm and media industry

Faster free public Wi-Fi network access islandwide.

Digital free-to-air television channels by the end of the year.

Over S$182 million in budget more for locally-produced programmes on culture and heritage.

These were among the wide-ranging plans to boost the info comm and media infrastructure announced by
Minister for Communications and Information (MCI) Yaacob Ibrahim in Parliament on Friday.

Wi-Fi speeds on Wireless@SG will be bumped on from 1Mbps to a maximum 2Mbps from next month.

"IDA will enhance our national wireless infrastructure by expanding the capacity and speed of Wireless@SG," said the Minister during the debate on the recently unveiled Budget.
Aside from faster speeds, the login process for Wireless@SG will also be simplified from next April with users only needing to log-in once instead of repeated sign-ins currently. This will be possible because

"This will complement our mobile networks and allow subscribers to more seamlessly shift from 3G/4G networks to Wireless@SG," said Dr Yaacob.

Turning to the media industry, free-to-air channels 5, 8, Suria and Vasantham will begin broadcasting in hi-definition by the end of the year. Other channels like Octo would do so only in 2016.

By April, consumer labels to identify digital TV sets will be available on televisions and separate set-top boxes.

The Media Development Authority (MDA) will ensure low income and the elderly will also benefit from this.

Dr Yaacob also said the MCI is still reviewing their media convergence plan and are looking at these areas: content regulation, encouraging local content, copyrights and licensing framework.

Regarding local content, Dr Yaacob said it would devote another S$182 million to increase the quality and quantity of public service broadcast (PSB) programmes over the next four years to focus on local heritage and culture. 
This amount is on top of a S$630 million budget that had been earmarked for public service programmes earlier in July 2012, spread across five years till 2016.

How to setup a wireless connection

How to setup a wireless connection


In this tutorial we will show you how to connect to a wireless network using Windows Vista. As you will see by yourself this is a pretty simple procedure. You don't have to be a computer genius to connect to a wireless network. All you have to do is follow these simple steps:

First, go to "Start Menu" -> "Control Panel" -> "Network and Internet".

Now... go to "Network and Sharing Center" and select "Connect to a network", like it is shown in the above screenshot.


Network

Choose "Show All" and hit the refresh button. If you find active network connections, select the one you want, click on "Connect" and don't forget to check the option that says "Start this connection automatically". If you check this option, Windows Vista will connect automatically to the selected network every time you log in.

If no networks are found, you can manually enter all network settings. This is how you do it:

In the “Connect to a network” window, click on “Set up a connection or network”, like shown in the above screenshot. Select “Manually connect to a wireless network” and press the “Next” button.

First, enter the “Network name”. In some cases the network name is identical to the name of the router - for example, my router is a Linksys, so the name of the network is Linksys.

Choose the security type and the encryption you use on your network. Now type the security key and check the option "Start this connection automatically".

Network configuration

Click the "Next" button, then click "Connect to..." and that should be all. You successfully configured a connection to a wireless network.


Do check the wireless is ON before doing the steps above especially for laptops.

Dlink DIR-615

Went to the PC Show at Suntec and looking for DIR-615. Well, it is getting crowded. Noticed that the hardware version is version B, but I'm looking for the C1 or later version. Though DIR-855 is out in the market, but it is still expensive and it costs twice as much as DIR-615!

There are some shops nearby the area selling the same device, though slightly more expensive, but hardware version is C2, firmware: 3.01.
