Singaporeans would like to work in Google, Shell: Survey

Singaporeans would like to work in Google, Shell: Survey

Singapore Airlines, Exxon Mobil and Keppel Corporation round out JobStreet.com's list of Singaporeans most preferred company to work for. Survey also reveals company reputation as main reason that candidates want to work for these companies.

SINGAPORE: Google and Shell have emerged tops in the list of companies that most Singaporeans want to work for, according to a survey by an online recruitment agency. Singapore Airlines, Exxon Mobil and Keppel Corporation rounded out the top five.
In a website post on Wednesday (Dec 24), the agency, JobStreet.com, said that according to the survey the main reason Singaporeans want to work for these companies is due to the company's reputation. Across all position levels, company reputation superseded salary as the main reason, while benefits and incentives - such as flexible working hours and work-from-home arrangements - came in second. Salary was ranked third.
Training and development came in fourth, with candidates hoping to enhance their work skills to improve their career prospects. Internal promotion and career growth, identified as important for candidates to stay and grow in a company, came in fifth.
A total of 940 employers across various industries participated in this survey held in September this year, said the online recruitment company.

Harder to find jobs

More degree-holders are without jobs and taking longer to find one

DESPITE signs of a turnaround in the job market, university graduates are no better off.
In fact, more of them are without jobs and taking longer to land a job, according to revised official figures released on Tuesday.
Part of the reason is that they often tend to seek jobs that pay close to what they used to earn, said MP Josephine Teo, who is also assistant secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress.
However, economists interviewed foresee their lot improving in the new year, when growth is expected to hit 5.5 per cent, according to a recent poll of 20 private-sector economists by the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Meanwhile, the labour market in the third quarter, following Singapore's exit from recession, shows 'encouraging signs of a turnaround', said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).
The revised figures show more jobs were added, fewer people were laid off and there were more vacancies between June and September.

Printing Web Pages

I encountered some funny incident yesterday and would like to share it. The name and job scope is withheld.

An "IT specialist" encountered some printing problems when trying to print some documents and he wanted the resulting web address not to be printed on the paper. [The simple solution is shown below.]

He keep insisting that there is nothing wrong with the network printer because he had printed many many times before, and he keep faulting with the roaming profile that he is using and that joker demand to change. Further, he said that he knew the problem sometime ago.

Well, rather than arguing with such "talent", lets google and see if the roaming profile is causing the problem. The point is not to see who is correct in the field.

The simple solution is shown below.

Printing Web Pages

Do you print out web pages? If so, do you become annoyed at all the header and footer info that gets printed on each and every page? You know, the web address, title, etc? Well, with Internet Explorer, you can get that adjusted right out of there, or customize it. Here's how:

1. Click the File menu, Page Setup

2. Find the "Headers & Footers" area and remove all the gibberish in the respective fields. Hit OK and you have it.

Before:

After:

Now, that will keep the computer from printing all of your header and footer info, but what if you want some of it? Well, you can do that too, using the parameters below in the header and footer fields:

&w Window title

&u Page address (URL)

&d Date in short format (as specified by Regional Settings in Control
Panel)

&D Date in long format (as specified by Regional Settings in Control
Panel)

&t Time in the format specified by Regional Settings in Control Panel

&T Time in 24-hour format

&p Current page number

&P Total number of pages

&& A single ampersand (&)

&b The text immediately following these characters as centered.

&b&b The text immediately following the first "&b" as centered, and the text following the second "&b" as right-justified.

For example, if you want the header to have the window (page) title and the URL, you would type:

&w &u

If you wanted to make it so it also specified you were the one who printed it, you could put something like:

&w &u Printed by Steve on &d

The only thing you need to keep an eye on is the spacing. To get a single space between items (like &w&u) you need to hit the space bar twice. Experiment and you'll get it. Enjoy!
