Police warn of new tactic used in phone scams

Police warn of new tactic used in phone scams
Posted 23 Jun 2016 17:50 Updated 23 Jun 2016 18:00

SINGAPORE: Following a spate of phone scams involving impersonators, police are now warning against a new tactic used by scammers.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (Jun 22), police said they have been informed of cases where members of the public received phone calls from people impersonating Government officials or representatives of courier companies, who then instruct them to download certain applications on their mobile phones.

Police said these applications, when downloaded, may introduce malware into devices that could in turn allow the scammers to gain access to incoming messages. This could then lead to the theft of important information, such as banking credentials and other personal details.

Police also reminded members of the public that no Government agency would ask for payment or personal information - such as bank usernames, passwords or one-time password (OTP) codes - through a phone call.

Police have advised members of the public to be wary when receiving calls of unknown origin, and to do the following:

- Ignore such calls;

- Do not follow the caller's instructions to install applications onto their phone;

- Do not give out personal information or bank details, whether on the website or to callers over the phone;

- Call the police hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information online, if they have information related to such crimes. Dial 999 if urgent police assistance is required.

Earlier in June, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) issued a warning about suspicious calls. The callers would claim to be an MOM or Government officer and would ask those on the other end of the line to transfer money to an account to resolve issues related to their stay in Singapore or work pass application.

There have also been reports of phone scammers impersonating officials overseas, or claiming to be representatives from DHL.

iphone zommed in

Problem:

Encountered an iphone 4 with all the icons "zoomed in". Basically, the screen is zoomed in.

This is because the zoom option under Accessibility is accidentally turned on.

Solutions:

One way is completely shut down and restart and it will revert to its original settings and it will not zoomed in any more.

Triple tap with three fingers will fix the issue.

iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode

iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode

Summary

Learn what to do if you have forgotten or can't remember your passcode, or if you see a red "disabled" message.

Products Affected

iPad, iPhone, iPod touch
When you set up a passcode to secure the use of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and you then enter the wrong passcode, you may see a red "disabled" message. If you forgot or can't remember your passcode, follow the steps in this article to resolve the issue.
If you enter the wrong passcode six or more times, you'll see a message that says one of the following:
  • iPhone is disabled
  • iPad is disabled
  • iPod touch is disabled
The message says to try again later:

After too many attempts, your device may display, "[Device] is disabled, connect to iTunes".

If you have previously synced your device with iTunes

You may be able to reset the passcode by restoring the device.
  1. Connect the device to the computer with which you normally sync and open iTunes.
Note: If iTunes prompts you to enter the passcode, try another computer that you have synced with. Otherwise, go to "If you have never synced your device with iTunes", below.
  2. Right-click the device in the left column and select Back up.
  3. When the backup is complete, select Restore.
  4. When finished, restore from your most recent backup.

If you have never synced your device with iTunes

Connecting the device may result in this error message: "iTunes could not connect to the [device] because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the [device] before it can be used with iTunes."

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
  2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
  3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
  4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
  5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.

If you don't have access to a computer

If you are using Find My iPhone, you can use Remote Wipe to restore your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode.

Help! My iphone 4 is a Window 7 box!

I was surprised by what this little app from danasoft reported. It showed that I am running on the Windows 7 platform and using Mozilla Firefox as my broswer. But there is a problem. I'm using my iphone 4 and it is running Safari as my web browser!

How does my iphone 4 transform itself into a Windows 7 box?

Reclaim my free space in iphone 4

Having been taking pics and pics. There are lots and lots of them taken and stored them in my iphone 4, until one fine day, I ran out of free space in my iphone 4!

Going to General -> Usage and then free up some space by deleting unnecessary apps in my iphone.

Under General -> About -> Diagnostics & Usage -> Diagnostics & Usage , I saw there are many logs files or crash reports. Ok, can I delete them and free up some space (if any?)

Did a quick search, sync it under itunes and then the logs files or crash reports will disappear..... and then dumped into my Windows Recycle Bin! In fact, the original location is under iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications.

Ok, so how many items are there and how much space it hogged? 32 items totalled 566MB!

Anyway, planning to change my iphone 4 too. Which phones do you think I should use?

To My 13-Year-Old, An iPhone Contract From Your Mom, With Love

To My 13-Year-Old, An iPhone Contract From Your Mom, With Love
Posted: 12/28/2012 5:15 pm

Dear Gregory

Merry Christmas! You are now the proud owner of an iPhone. Hot Damn! You are a good and responsible 13-year-old boy and you deserve this gift. But with the acceptance of this present comes rules and regulations. Please read through the following contract. I hope that you understand it is my job to raise you into a well rounded, healthy young man that can function in the world and coexist with technology, not be ruled by it. Failure to comply with the following list will result in termination of your iPhone ownership.

I love you madly and look forward to sharing several million text messages with you in the days to come.

    1. It is my phone. I bought it. I pay for it. I am loaning it to you. Aren't I the greatest?

    2. I will always know the password.

    3. If it rings, answer it. It is a phone. Say hello, use your manners. Do not ever ignore a phone call if the screen reads "Mom" or "Dad." Not ever.

    4. Hand the phone to one of your parents promptly at 7:30 p.m. every school night and every weekend night at 9:00 p.m. It will be shut off for the night and turned on again at 7:30 a.m. If you would not make a call to someone's land line, wherein their parents may answer first, then do not call or text. Listen to those instincts and respect other families like we would like to be respected.

    5. It does not go to school with you. Have a conversation with the people you text in person. It's a life skill. *Half days, field trips and after school activities will require special consideration.

    6. If it falls into the toilet, smashes on the ground, or vanishes into thin air, you are responsible for the replacement costs or repairs. Mow a lawn, babysit, stash some birthday money. It will happen, you should be prepared.

    7. Do not use this technology to lie, fool, or deceive another human being. Do not involve yourself in conversations that are hurtful to others. Be a good friend first or stay the hell out of the crossfire.

    8. Do not text, email, or say anything through this device you would not say in person.

    9. Do not text, email, or say anything to someone that you would not say out loud with their parents in the room. Censor yourself.

    10. No porn. Search the web for information you would openly share with me. If you have a question about anything, ask a person -- preferably me or your father.

    11. Turn it off, silence it, put it away in public. Especially in a restaurant, at the movies, or while speaking with another human being. You are not a rude person; do not allow the iPhone to change that.

    12. Do not send or receive pictures of your private parts or anyone else's private parts. Don't laugh. Someday you will be tempted to do this despite your high intelligence. It is risky and could ruin your teenage/college/adult life. It is always a bad idea. Cyberspace is vast and more powerful than you. And it is hard to make anything of this magnitude disappear -- including a bad reputation.

    13. Don't take a zillion pictures and videos. There is no need to document everything. Live your experiences. They will be stored in your memory for eternity.

    14. Leave your phone home sometimes and feel safe and secure in that decision. It is not alive or an extension of you. Learn to live without it. Be bigger and more powerful than FOMO (fear of missing out).

    15. Download music that is new or classic or different than the millions of your peers that listen to the same exact stuff. Your generation has access to music like never before in history. Take advantage of that gift. Expand your horizons.

    16. Play a game with words or puzzles or brain teasers every now and then.

    17. Keep your eyes up. See the world happening around you. Stare out a window. Listen to the birds. Take a walk. Talk to a stranger. Wonder without googling.

    18. You will mess up. I will take away your phone. We will sit down and talk about it. We will start over again. You and I, we are always learning. I am on your team. We are in this together.

It is my hope that you can agree to these terms. Most of the lessons listed here do not just apply to the iPhone, but to life. You are growing up in a fast and ever changing world. It is exciting and enticing. Keep it simple every chance you get. Trust your powerful mind and giant heart above any machine. I love you. I hope you enjoy your awesome new iPhone.

xoxoxo,
Mom

This will appear in Issue 31 of our weekly iPad magazine, Huffington, in the iTunes App store, available January 11.

Experts caution against toddlers getting too familiar with devices

Experts caution against toddlers getting too familiar with devices
By Evelyn Lam, Dylan Loh | Posted: 24 November 2012 2242 hrs

SINGAPORE: Experts have cautioned against letting toddlers three years old and below, get too familiar with mobile devices.

They said it might hamper their ability to learn as they grow.

Three-year-old Randy Smith has been playing with an iPad since the age of two, and his parents said he is quite familiar with some of the more advanced features in the mobile device.

Experts said children this young should spend more time interacting with their physical environment.

They said interacting too much with a virtual interface could interfere with a child's ability to understand the world around him.

Colin Smith, father of Randy Smith, said: "There was once when we just left him (Randy) to go to bed with an iPad.

"We didn't check on him till about two hours later because both of us were working at home and when we got to him, we found that he had been playing for the past two hours and didn't want to go to sleep."

Foxconn unable to meet iPhone 5 demand

Foxconn unable to meet iPhone 5 demand
Posted: 08 November 2012 1259 hrs

TAIPEI: Taiwan's Foxconn has admitted that it cannot meet strong demand for Apple's new iPhone 5 due to difficulties in building the gadget, as investors grow concerned about the US giant's future earnings.

"We can't really fulfil Apple's requests. Our shipments are insufficient... given the huge market demand," Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou told reporters late Wednesday.

He added that the design of the iPhone 5, of which five million were sold over its launch weekend in September, has made production difficult, but did not elaborate.

He declined to say whether Foxconn plans to outsource some of the iPhone orders to other makers.

The iPhone has been a huge driver of Apple's phenomenal profits, along with the iPad, both of which are made by Foxconn which also manufactures products for other firms such as Nokia, Intel and Sony.

Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said on October 25 that demand for the iPhone 5 continued to outstrip supply, but that it was working hard to catch up.

Last month the firm, which is based in Cupertino, California, said net profit in the July-September quarter climbed to US$8.2 billion thanks to a 58 per cent jump in sales of its phones and a 26 per cent rise in tablet sales.

But Apple's shares have fallen in recent weeks owing to concerns it may not be able to meet demand in the near future, as well as increased competition from rivals including Samsung.

Mars Hsu, an analyst at Grand Cathay Securities, said Apple's main worry was in product innovation, as the new iPad and iPad Mini did not appear to be very different from competitors' gadgets.

Apple has also faced much criticism since the launch of the iPhone 5, following a number of problems.

It was forced to apologise soon after the phone's launch because of its glitch-ridden maps application in the new operating system, which led the firm to urge customers to use rival apps while improvements were made.

The company is also undergoing a management overhaul and last month announced the executive in charge of Maps, Siri and other software in the iPhone is leaving as part of a shakeup.

Taiwan-based Foxconn is the world's largest contract electronics maker and assembles products for Apple, Sony and Nokia, among others in its factories in China.

The company has come under the spotlight after suicides and labour unrest at its Chinese plants in recent years, which activists have blamed on tough working conditions, prompting calls for better treatment of staff.

Foxconn employs more than one million workers in China, roughly half of them based in its main facility in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong.
