SEOUL: Samsung Electronics will sell its printer business to US computer maker HP, the companies said Monday (Sep 12), as the South Korean giant accelerates restructuring efforts amid a generational power transfer in the founding Lee family.
HP said it will buy the unit for US$1.05 billion and that the deal will boost growth opportunities in the copier segment, while Samsung made clear the transaction was "part of the company's efforts to concentrate on its core business areas".
Samsung's printing unit has 6,000 employees and posted total revenue of 2 trillion won (US$1.8 billion) in 2015, the company said in its statement Monday.
Samsung Electronics - the world's largest smartphone maker that also produces home appliances and memory chips - is a flagship unit of the Samsung Group.
The group, currently chaired by Lee Kun-Hee, has merged, broken out or newly listed some of its key units in recent years as Lee prepares to hand over the reins to his son and company vice chairman J.Y. Lee.
Recent health problems concerning the senior Lee, currently bedridden after suffering a heart attack in 2014, have prompted the business to step up these efforts.
The Samsung Electronics board proposed a plan Monday to nominate J.Y. Lee as a new board member.
"More than two years after the hospitalization of Chairman Lee... the board of Samsung... believes that the time is now right to nominate Jay Y. Lee as a member of the board to allow him to take a more active role in the Company's strategic decision-making," the statement said.
The sale of the printing business and Lee's nomination were approved by the board Monday but remain subject to shareholder approval in October.
Despite effectively controlling the Samsung Group in recent years, the younger Lee has so far not taken any official board seat, maintaining a relatively low profile.
The group, comprised of dozens of units ranging from electronics to hotels, posted total revenue of US$287.8 billion in 2014, making it South Korea's largest business group.

SingTel introduces new 4G voice services
SingTel has partnered Samsung and Ericsson to offer its Voice over LTE service suite, which touts faster call connection and clearer sound quality.
SINGAPORE: SingTel has partnered Samsung and Ericsson to offer its full-featured Voice over LTE (VoLTE) suite of services, named 4G ClearVoice, which it claims is the world's first.
In a statement issued today (May 19), the local telco said its VoLTE service will offer a suite of telephony services such as call waiting and forwarding in addition to making voice calls - all on its 4G network. A company spokesperson said while other telecom operators may have introduced VoLTE services, these are not as comprehensive as the one SingTel has unveiled.
4G ClearVoice will be made available to existing Samsung Galaxy Note 3 users first via a software update, which the telco said would be pushed out progressively between May 31 and June 1. Customers who buy new Galaxy Note 3 devices from May 31 will have the feature pre-installed, it said.
The service is available at no extra cost for SingTel's postpaid customers.
"Customers will enjoy the flexibility of making calls and using ultra high speed 4G mobile data services at the same time," Johan Buse, president of consumer marketing at SingTel, said in the statement.
VoLTE users will get to enjoy faster call connection services - in less than 2 seconds - and clearer voice quality compared with conventional mobile voice services, SingTel said.
While there are existing voice services delivered over mobile networks such as Microsoft's Skype, the company spokesperson said 4G ClearVoice boasts "carrier-grade" assurance in terms of reliability and quality.
He added the software update to enable SingTel's VoLTE service will be pushed out to other "popular handsets in the coming months", but did not specify a time frame.

BARCELONA, Spain: South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung has presented a new version of its tablet computer with a larger screen of 10.1 inches, four months after launching its first Galaxy Tab.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1, which uses the latest version of Google's Android operating system, weighs 599 grams (1 pound, five ounces) and is just 10.9 millimetres (0.43 inches) thick.
Samsung's first tablet, the Galaxy Tab with a seven-inch screen, was launched in October.
The South Korean company also unveiled its latest smartphone on the eve of the opening of the mobile phone industry's annual conference in Barcelona.
It presented the Galaxy S II as "the world's slimmest smartphone" at just 8.49 millimetres thick.
The head of Samsung's mobile division, JK Shin, said they focused on "screen, speed and content" while developing the phone.
The Galaxy S II includes NFC or Near Field Communication technology which allows for make secured transactions such as payments for riding on public transport,by swiping the phone near a receptor.
It is also equipped with voice recognition that allows users to dictate text messages instead of tapping on the screen.
With similar technology, is the compact and ergonomically designed GALAXY mini which Samsung recently rolled out to Singapore consumers along with two other new Android mobile phones.
The GALAXY mini comes with a Voice Search function to search for information without typing, as well as services such as Google Mail and Google Talk, and an integrated phonebook with direct SNS and IM links.
There's also the frameless, rounded, smooth edged GALAXY Ace with 3.5” HVGA display running on a 800MHz processor for smooth web browsing and seamless multitasking between apps; and the compact Samsung GALAXY Fit with a large screen for easy use of the integrated email system and ‘Office Viewer’ function.
